[Kochiya Sanae Cosplay] Touhou Project, the full-screen aesthetics of night sakura and the water surface

RED's (Xiaohongshu's) recent update is truly beneficial for an Anime-style photography enthusiast and cosplayer like me who is obsessed with shooting grand scenes. In the past, when posting a nine-grid layout, unlike typical convention photos, grand scenes like this nighttime waterside combined with cherry blossoms and the composition of stepping stones on the water surface completely lost their vibe in thumbnail format. With this update, the full-screen browsing mode for large images can finally present the exact atmosphere I wanted in its original flavor. Seriously, many photo details can only be truly appreciated when zoomed in full screen.

The shooting location chosen this time was by a canal where night sakura was in full bloom, featuring stone steps and carved railings. There were few people at night, making the whole environment exceptionally quiet. Under the intense lighting illumination, the night sakura presented a pure texture that was almost silver-white, forming a very strong contrast with the deep, dark tones of the water surface. To capture that sense of lightness when standing on the stepping stones over the water, we searched for several angles back and forth. I personally really love the sitting composition in Photo 4. The surface of the stone isn't perfectly flat, but it provided a stable support point. The naturally draped skirt hem when sitting down, along with the visual extension of the white socks, coordinated with the leg pose to give the frame a demure temperament mixed with a touch of playfulness. Moreover, the water surface directly reflected the entire posture of the figure; this top-bottom symmetrical beauty can truly only be captured simultaneously in a grand scene.

As for the costume, I chose a blue-and-white themed dress combined with white flowing detached sleeves this time. The fabric of the sleeves is very light, drifting naturally when a gentle breeze blows past, adding a dynamic sense to the frame. The upper body features some straps and metallic-textured decorations, while the deep blue pleated skirt on the lower body, paired with a white lace underskirt, shows distinct layers under the nighttime flash. Although standing for a long time does get a bit heavy, these details must be maxed out for the sake of the visual effect. The props also took a lot of thought. The gorgeous golden ritual implement held in hand, with its reflective texture under the lights and the draped colorful ribbons, serves as the finishing touch of the entire look. Especially during nighttime shoots, light and shadow hitting these small items can instantly enrich the frame. However, standing on a stone by the water while maintaining balance to hold this prop was indeed a minor challenge for our expression management and bodily control.

Next up was the lighting. Night sakura photography actually heavily tests a photographer's control over light. If the light is too hard, the cherry blossoms will turn into a dead white sheet, losing all details; if the light is too dim, the water reflections won't be clear. We spent a long time syncing up with the photographer, Mr. Mirrow, using high-power flashes for side-backlight setups, which could both suppress the background highlights and clearly outline the character's silhouette and costume details, allowing even the texture of the cherry blossom petals to be visible. In post-processing, I intentionally preserved that hazy, glowing atmosphere. The scattered cherry blossom petals on the water surface, along with some glowing special effects added in post, made the entire frame look like a dreamlike scene. Although some effects are exaggerated, they instead look highly coordinated under the unique mood of the night sakura. Finally, I hope the details in these large images did not disappoint everyone's patience in viewing them. This method of shooting while interacting with water reflections is truly suitable for the character atmosphere in Touhou Project, which carries a mysterious and serene temperament. The mutual cooperation between photography and performance is all about continuously searching for that perfect moment.
