This Rin Kokonoe cosplay from Kodomo no Jikan had been in the planning for quite a while. To capture that childlike innocence mixed with a touch of sassy attitude, the photographer and I discussed many details in advance. The classroom setting was truly ideal—the blackboard, globe, vintage desks, and old-school cassette recorder in the background instantly brought back memories of the anime's atmosphere.
For the costume, I specifically chose the white sailor-collared short-sleeved top with blue trim, paired with dark blue gym shorts, which is her most iconic school uniform. The length of the Twintails was a major focal point; the wig was long and smooth, requiring constant attention during shooting to keep it from getting tangled.
The large pink ball hair ties were the soul props of this look—including the ones at the ends of the braids and on the crown—all custom-made to achieve that energetic, vibrant bright pink. The oversized gold bell around my neck was another key highlight; every time I leaned over or turned my head, it let out a crisp chime, adding immensely to the playful vibe. The red leather backpack had noticeable weight when worn, but it was essential for staying true to the character, pressing down slightly on my shoulders as I moved around.
The biggest challenge of this shoot was mastering facial expressions. Rin Kokonoe's subtle smirk—blending cunning mischief with childlike purity—is genuinely tricky to control. Because the classroom interior was relatively dim, the actual lighting relied on natural light through the window augmented by reflector boards, making angles critical to ensure light fell nicely across my face and the wig.
Among the handheld props, the handcuffs, pink plush bunny, and vintage cassette player were all used to enrich the posing. For instance, holding up the handcuffs toward the camera in several shots not only showed a cheeky side but also added interactive depth to the frame. The details of seated postures had to be carefully managed as well; sitting atop the wooden chair back created an elevated posture that perfectly showcased the character's petite silhouette.
Shooting a full day of content was quite exhausting—the wig was heavy, leaving my neck and shoulders slightly sore—but seeing the captured frames on the camera monitor made everything feel worthwhile. Especially when sorting through the photos, I found that the details, makeup, and styling turned out very faithful to the original design.
I hesitated a bit when picking the cover photo because every shot had a different charm—some featuring well-behaved glances at the lens, others capturing energetic full-body poses. In the end, I followed everyone's advice and chose the first shot sitting on the chair back, as that posture paired with the long Twintails and uniform best captured her signature attitude.
Post-processing involved minimal heavy modifications, mainly preserving the authentic light, shadow, and texture while slightly brightening the skin tone. The photographer's snapshot timing was exceptional, capturing many candid micro-gestures beautifully.
Wearing this gear in a school classroom felt magical, as if stepping directly into those everyday slice-of-life episodes. From each individual accessory to the staging of the scene, we did our best to get as close as possible to the character's true state.
Completing this set gave me a fresh perspective on cosplay; different characters bring entirely distinct dressing experiences, and this shoot fulfilled a long-held little wish. I hope everyone viewing these photos can feel the lively, energetic atmosphere inherent to this character.
