[Vivian cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero: Bathed in Sunshine

The sunshine was absolutely fantastic, so I couldn't resist sharing these unedited shots. This time I shot Vivian from Zenless Zone Zero. Preparing for this made me realize that maxing out both her sharp, crisp energy and atmospheric vibe takes quite a bit of effort. Let's start with the costume design: the white top features classic bell sleeves, whose layered ruffles sway so gracefully when catching the outdoor breeze. The corset waistband uses a firm black material with metallic buckles, which not only sculpts the waistline beautifully but also embodies that urban techwear vibe of New Eridu. The lower half features an asymmetrical black-and-blue color-blocked skirt with rich layering that elongates the silhouette without looking thin.

The heaviest prop this time was actually this custom-made umbrella. The canopy features a deep blue to purple gradient with subtle botanical totem prints if you look closely, and the pointed tip was faithfully recreated—its sharp silhouette aligns perfectly with her cool, aloof temperament. Carrying it around outdoors made opening and slinging the umbrella the most natural posing cues for the day. I tried adjusting the umbrella's angle multiple times during the shoot, not just to shade the sun, but to present that unique sharp edge of the prop, making it feel less like a mere accessory and more like an extension of the character's aura.

I specifically chose an outdoor time around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. The sun was at a higher angle, filtering light through clouds and leaves; although bright, this vivid light was perfect for highlighting the character's translucent feel. Take the third look-back shot, for instance: a powerful backlight struck from behind, creating a golden rim-light around my hair strands while illuminating the delicate sheer texture of the white bell sleeves. This gentle warmth brought by natural light is something studio setups can rarely replicate.

For makeup, I placed heavy emphasis on the eyes and brows. Vivian has expressive eyes, so I reinforced the eyeliner and paired it with custom red Elf ears. The red ears created a striking contrast against the purple hair, fitting her fantasy-tinged aura nicely. To stay true to her character design, I subtly contoured my face to sharpen lighting and shadows, ensuring my features stayed three-dimensional under harsh outdoor highlights.

As for posing, I did my homework. In the set, I tried several ways of holding the umbrella—standing it vertically in front for a grounded posture, or slinging it over my shoulder while looking back at the camera. Different umbrella poses convey different emotional states, and the look-back shot carried a freer, more carefree charm. Squinting into the bright sun was tricky, but we kept adjusting positions and lighting. The photographer patiently incorporated the distant blue sky, white clouds, and lush trees into the framing, allowing the character to transition naturally from 2D into 3D scenery.

Regarding outfit care, although sweating a bit during the shoot, the breathable fabric kept things comfortable without feeling stuffy. While the waist corset pulled quite tight, it was a necessary small price to achieve her canonical visual proportions. The asymmetrical skirt looked fantastic, fluttering in the wind to reveal the white pleated inner skirt, layering lines and stretching leg proportions. Under ample sunlight, the black-and-white color blocking accented with a pop of purple created a strong visual color balance.

Lastly, I'd like to touch on post-processing choices. I kept the natural tone of the raw photos without over-blurring the background or tweaking color temperatures, wanting viewers to feel the genuine, vibrant energy of real sunlight. After all, embedding a character into a living natural environment on such a luminous day is inherently charming and lively. I hope this candid capture of light and shade conveys my sincerity and love for this character.
