Dedicated my first photo drop of '25 to Aisaka Taiga, and actually caught the real Palmtop Tiger. I previously ran all over several places in Sydney but couldn't find that kind of Japanese-style old school building or a classroom scene with a slight vintage feel. In the end, my photographer partner and I directly commandeered the outdoor tables and chairs of a restaurant near UNSW, setting up a raw outdoor studio late at night. Although the tables were modern and the brick wall lacked a bit of ambiance, after setting up the lighting, it unexpectedly had a very relaxed 'after-school' vibe. To restore Taiga's red blazer school uniform from Toradora!, the costume and props were kept as close to the original design as possible for this school style cosplay. A special mention goes to the wig: the ends of the long orange hair were intentionally given slight loose curls so that when the wind blows, there is a natural hair flow without appearing heavy or stiff. Bringing along the iconic wooden baseball bat and a small Palmtop Tiger plushie as props, it instantly felt as if that fiercely cute Taiga was standing right in front of me. During the shoot, I tried a composition sitting cross-legged on the table, utilizing the flashlight as the main light source combined with a side reflector to fill the dark areas, ensuring that both the color texture of the red blazer and the layers of the black tights were well preserved. Combined with this outdoor table and chair setting, it actually gave the character a more slice-of-life atmosphere. Although we stayed up very late to pull off this makeshift studio, seeing the final photos made the all-nighter completely worth it. Recreating classic anime cosplay often requires finer attention to detail. I hope this Taiga set, hard-won in the deep of a Sydney night, can convey the youthful energy of Toradora! through this Sydney anime photography session.
