This combination of outfit and props is definitely the "happy hometown" for great photos. When initially conceiving this set of outdoor convention photos for CICF, I wanted to choose a look that breaks the conventional stereotype of JK uniform fashion. Putting on this black long-sleeved sailor suit with white stripes accenting the collar and cuffs, and tying that wide pure white neckerchief, the stark contrast between black and white instantly elevated the visual center of gravity for the whole look. The lower body is paired with a black pleated skirt and black tights, topped off with a pair of black loafers. An all-black-dominated outfit actually places high demands on texture; the weightless feel of the hair strands in the wind and the large area of black clothing form a visual sense of breathability.
The prop selected for the shoot is that wooden sword wrapped with a white diamond-cross pattern handle wrap. Its presence is not just an extension of the styling but has become a "switch" to unlock various vivid expressions. In the first few shots, the wooden sword lies quietly on the stone ground; combined with my gesture of a fingertip lightly touching my cheek or hands on my hips, it creates a playful, casual campus feel. When moving into dynamic shooting, the height and angle of gripping the wooden sword change rapidly; especially under the powerful backlighting of the afternoon sun, the elongated shadows fill the entire frame with narrative tension. That wooden sword is actually quite heavy to hold, but during the outdoor real shoot, the realistic prop weight instead made it easier for me to find that subtle balance between being "tsundere" and "competitive" for the character.
This outdoor light is the very soul of the entire set of photos. The afternoon sun captured by the photographer perfectly outlined the rim light of the orange-pink long straight wig. The halo cast by the wind-blown hair strands enveloped my entire self in a warm and translucent sense of airiness. To match this look, the makeup specially reinforced the eye features; the light yellow-green colored contacts worn gave my gaze a sharper focus, paired with berry-toned hydrated lip makeup, presenting a highly natural and vivid state before the lens. Standing by the outdoor streets and beside the lawn, using a large aperture to blur the passersby and trees behind into hazy light spots highly concentrated the visual focus on the character, greatly enhancing the 2D atmosphere of the frame.
This outfit actually requires careful grooming when worn, especially the creases of the pleated skirt and the flatness of the neckerchief, which can easily deform during long periods of squatting, sitting, or making large movements. To shoot that final dynamic lunging sword-slash, many drafts were designed for the prop-holding posture beforehand. Real on-site shooting is often exactly like this, requiring constant adjustments to the center of gravity to find the coordination between light and props. The afternoon sun in Guangzhou can sometimes be extremely intense, but if you can utilize the ground reflector well or rely on the diffuse reflection of natural light, you can on the contrary shoot highly dreamlike, ethereal light and shadow where the hair strands seem to glow. In this block outside the CICF venue, we tried snapshots from different camera angles. From a casual street-vendor sitting posture to a sharp demeanor when holding the wooden sword high up, every single moment preserved a unique sense of vitality. This successful Guangzhou photography booking turned out amazingly.
Aside from the clothing itself, the contrast between the woven texture of the wooden sword handle wrap and the flowing fluffiness of the hair is also a detail I'm highly satisfied with in this set of pictures. When you truly put on the character's designated outfit and grip her exclusive prop tightly, many subconscious body movements will naturally flow out. That is an experience of being completely immersed in the character's state, not for deliberately striking a pose, but truly feeling as if you are inside that story scene, carrying a bit of unyielding stubbornness and innocence. I hope this set of photos can make everyone feel this worthwhile creative passion, as well as the dedication and sincerity toward recreating the character.
