[Bagpipe cosplay] Arknights: Natural Light and Shadow in the Rice Field

After waiting half a month to finally catch a perfectly sunny day in Hangzhou, I set out for this Hangzhou location shoot portraying Bagpipe from Arknights. To faithfully capture the character's setting, we put tremendous effort into the styling. The reddish-orange braided hair was woven with great detail, and the white ruffled blouse paired with a deep blue pinafore skirt and leather belt around the waist looked stunning under the natural sunlight.

The location chosen was a vast, golden rice field. Standing amidst ears of rice that reached past my thighs, the brush of stalks against my skirt felt wonderfully authentic. To evoke Bagpipe's rustic and vibrant charm, we explored a variety of angles. I was especially satisfied with the composition of the third shot—a low-angle perspective as a Backlit portrait where the backlighting traced the outline of the figure, letting the deep blue skirt pop against the golden backdrop to form a classic warm-cold contrast, which is why I chose it as the cover.

The shooting process was quite physically demanding, and luckily I applied sunscreen in advance. For low-angle shots, we had to manage the drape and layers of the skirt's edge, while reflector positioning crucially affected the light on my face. When the breeze swept through the field, it brought an organic sense of movement that was captured right as the shutter clicked. The post-processing focused on maintaining transparency and airiness while amplifying the contrast between golden amber and deep navy, highlighting the texture of the rice stalks and natural skin tones. Wardrobe, props, and photography synchronized smoothly, making for a wonderfully comfortable creative session.

The fabric of this outfit was remarkably tailored. The denim skirt underwent wash processing to yield a retro vintage tone, and the hem was cut widely so it could spin into a broad, picturesque circle in the field. The rice stalks varied in hue across the field, offering subtle shifts in lightness that served as a natural backdrop. Walking through the paddy caused unsteady footing, but it naturally conveyed a candid, rustic authenticity fitting for the character.

Throughout the Rice field photoshoot, we alternated between close-ups and medium shots to authentically convey Bagpipe's demeanor. In particular, the final shot lying in the rice field reflected a deeply relaxed and nature-immersed presence that resonates with her personality. Having stood under the sun for hours, a subtle golden glow washed over the deep blue fabric, leaving my clothes dusted with chaff by wrap time. Getting slightly dirty didn't matter at all—it was all for the sake of realism. The surrounding atmosphere greatly enhanced my ability to immerse myself in the character's mindset.

Although planned two weeks in advance, the weather truly cooperated. Shifting clouds in the afternoon brought delightful surprises with delicate variations in light intensity. Outdoor shoots rely on a bit of luck and test a photographer's candid capture skills, and our teamwork flowed seamlessly. A Bagpipe cosplay outdoor shoot like this is rare; taking full advantage of Hangzhou's gorgeous natural landscapes was an invaluable learning and creative milestone. The resulting photos feel visually rich and expressively grounded. During color grading, deliberately calibrating the color temperatures between shadows and highlights ensured a natural transition between warm and cool tones, giving depth to the character's presence.
