This costume and prop set for Phrolova's Twilight Tale gave me an unprecedented sense of heaviness during the photoshoot. In particular, the long sword was so heavy that it was nearly impossible to hold steady in hand for long. The line in the post saying "this sword is so heavy" was by no means an exaggeration; during shooting, I had to exert considerable effort to find my center of gravity just to maintain the sword-wielding posture, making the entire process feel like weight training. Besides the sword, the metal cage crinoline was also a challenging piece of gear, greatly restricting leg movement so that walking required constant care not to catch on the floor or bump into props. Because the red-and-black Gothic style cosplay gown had numerous layers, coupled with that outer metal cage, the perceived temperature was very high, leaving me in a sweltering state throughout the shoot. However, because the overall visual effect was remarkably striking—and the warm yellow vintage clock and carpet of red roses in the background lent the scene a dramatic flair—persevering felt completely worthwhile.
Using an A7M5 paired with a 50-150mm F2 GM lens, the background bokeh brought by the wide aperture was mesmerizing, seamlessly blending the vintage atmosphere with the complex light and shadow. This telephoto lens was especially convenient for full-body shots, effectively elongating the leg lines while compressing the background. Due to the heavy cage crinoline and props, I attempted many poses with unstable centers of gravity; for instance, in the shot sitting among the petal pile, I had to keep my legs completely straight while carefully controlling the skirt placement and metal ring angles to avoid wardrobe mishaps. In several standing poses, with the sword's center of gravity shifted heavily to one side, my body had to lean toward the other to stay balanced, making it difficult to maintain an elegant posture. In post-processing, the photographer deliberately retained the rich saturation of the reds and shadow details while retouching the skin texture to look luminous and clear. Shooting 2D characters with such structurally complex costumes in Cosplay photography truly tests both the photographer's guidance and the model's physical endurance. Although the process was grueling, looking at these finished photos makes me appreciate how much the elaborate gear elevates the character's presence. If there are shoots with similarly heavyweight gear in the future, I will definitely prepare with more arm strength training in advance.
