[Cartethyia Cosplay] Interweaving Blue and White Etherealness by the Water in Wuthering Waves

In Wuthering Waves, Cartethyia possesses a secluded, pure aura. I decided to recreate her under bright daylight using the geometric cuts of a white arcade and the deep water mirror of a swimming pool. Light was abundant across the venue; under the scorching sun, the white architectural structures created sharp, clean boundaries between highlights and shadows in daylight, perfect for emphasizing the premium feel and layered contrast of black, white, and blue in this costume.

The tailoring of the outfit itself is quite distinctive. The black main piece features a waist-baring design, leaving just the right amount of negative space for the waistline and neck-to-shoulder proportions. Combined with asymmetrical gauze ribbons front and back, it creates an airy feel as I walk, giving the silhouette excellent extension. To express the character's lively fluidity, I sat at the edge of the pool with my toes lightly tapping the water surface (the cover photo). The ripples breaking the peace of the area naturally reflected the color of the blue sky. White high-heeled sandals with wrap-around straps looked light and delicate, pairing with the white-and-blue gradient skirt to set a cool summer tone overall.

When styling the pointed elf ears and blonde braided hairpiece, I intentionally highlighted the icy transparency of the blue contact lenses, aiming for a self-luminous visual effect at the boundary between shade and sunlight under the arcade. During the shoot, the photographer focused on capturing moments when the wind caught the hem of the outfit. Particularly in the corridor, sunlight filtering through pillars cast striped light and shadow patterns, giving the character a cinematic narrative feel. Holding the staff, I matched it with relaxed gestures like lightly touching my forehead or looking back sideways, striving to display Cartethyia's character tension through varied poses.

Of course, shooting by the pool brought practical challenges in outdoor photography. To keep the costume from getting wet, movements near the water had to be very careful. The long white and blue streamers often dragged on the ground, making them prone to dust, and strong winds blew them into a mess, requiring constant re-positioning to keep every frame neat. Meanwhile, under intense outdoor light, we needed to use the shadows cast by the arcade to soften harsh highlights, letting the light serve purely to outline the silhouette rather than create unflattering facial shadows.

Looking at prop compatibility, the long staff's length and color scheme matched the overall look perfectly. The gradient on the staff echoed the ribbons on the costume, transitioning from pure white to clear blue, enhancing visual harmony. When holding the staff, I consciously kept my wrist naturally relaxed to maintain the weapon's solemnness without appearing stiff. Especially during standing poses near the water, maintaining upper body stability during subtle movements was crucial to ensure the flowy fabric draped naturally without letting heavy moisture affect the outfit's airy feel.

What attracted me most about this look is its concrete embodiment of ethereal elements. As a cosplayer, our job isn't just standing in front of the camera wearing the outfit, but bringing out the character's aura through posture and gaze. From static close-ups to candid snapshots, different angles unlock distinct sides of the character. Sitting by the water feels relaxed and lazy, while standing in the arcade creates a stronger sense of extension. Whether it's the white gradient on the staff prop or the texture of the ribbons, I made sure they were clearly presented to the viewer.

During the shoot, I also realized that the water surface added tremendously to the overall ambiance. Plain white walls or blue skies can feel thin, but when the character's reflection appears in the pool, the image instantly gains depth. To capture a complete water reflection, we lowered the camera angle parallel to the water level, fitting the sky's blue, white architecture, the character, and the reflection into a single frame, which brilliantly highlighted the refreshing feel of a summer poolside.

Although the shooting process was demanding—braving harsh outdoor sunlight while repeatedly tweaking exposure and shutter speed—seeing the character and water reflection juxtaposed in the same frame made every effort worthwhile. Sunlight, flowing water, pure white arches, and a splash of blue—I believe this photo set effectively conveys the feeling of the character immersed in a natural setting. Through this cosplay sharing of behind-the-scenes insights, I hope to connect with fellow cosplay enthusiasts on how to utilize the environment to highlight character themes in outdoor photography.
