This time I chose the seaside as the shooting location for Genshin Impact's Furina, mainly because of that deep and serene light-and-shadow atmosphere during the transition from dusk to night. A lot of thought went into the preparation of costumes and props for this shoot. Furina's gown is very exquisite in details, with a black corset paired with blue diamond-shaped gemstone decorations, plus a multi-layered structured skirt hem, especially the outer translucent blue tulle ribbons, which can present a very natural dynamic feel under the sea breeze. However, during actual shooting, this multi-layered material skirt hem also tested the positioning quite a bit; it was necessary to ensure expansive movements while avoiding stepping on the inner white ruffles.
The head styling is also a focus. This black wide-brimmed hat is relatively large in size, and the lace trim on the edge appears particularly delicate in the night wind and shadows. To fit the character's temperament, I wore silver-white wavy short hair, and specially emphasized the red eyeshadow and blush, paired with colored contact lenses, hoping to present a mysterious yet slightly melancholic feeling. The blue gemstone decorations on the gloves echo the details on the chest, and the combination of black stockings and over-the-knee boots also makes the overall styling lines look sharper.
The shooting day was actually quite exhausting. It gets dark very quickly by the sea, and the light changes rapidly. We mainly relied on the lantern as the main light source in the frame, requiring hand movements to keep the lantern at a stable height during shooting, while also cooperating with the photographer's fill light so that the character would not be swallowed by the background against the deep blue night sky and orange-red sunset glow. Holding the lantern to strike poses really made my arms sore, but seeing the cool-warm contrasting light and shadow effects in the final photos made all this hardship completely worthwhile. Especially the third full-body shot, low-angle shooting paired with the fluttering skirt hem, completely showcased that mysterious feeling of walking by the sea.
As a cosplayer, every photoshoot is a re-understanding and shaping of the character. This time, standing by the seaside blowing in the wind and holding a lantern, I felt as if I was truly immersed in that mysterious world. Although during the shoot it was necessary to constantly adjust the wind-blown hair and ribbons, the final presented atmosphere made me feel that all the tossing and turning were worth it. This set of photos can be said to be a perfect combination of light, costume, and scene, and I hope you can feel this serenity from the deep sea.
The wind by the sea on the shooting day was much stronger than expected. To make the skirt hem and blue ribbons present that extremely tense flowing feel, I had to repeatedly adjust my position on the beach to find the angle where the wind direction was most suitable. The arm holding the lantern began to ache slightly later on because it was suspended for a long time, but for the stability and mystery in the frame, I had to endure the soreness and maintain the posture. The photographer's candid shots were also crucial, because the lantern is warm yellow light, while the sky behind is deep blue and water reflection, requiring very precise exposure control between the two, otherwise it's easy to lose the cloud details of the sky or make the red makeup on the character's face look dirty. We constantly tested the light distance and output power on-site to achieve the current effect.
In addition, wearing this costume also took quite a bit of effort. The ties at the waist needed to be tightened to reflect the cinched-waist effect, while the layering of the skirt hem required every layer to be neatly smoothed out. The innermost black lining, the outer white gauze, and the outermost blue transparent fabric had different layer reactions when moving. Especially the part where black stockings are paired with thigh rings and long boots, it needed both the crispness of combat and to blend into the overall gorgeous fantasy style. In the dark background, these details instead became important elements to enhance the depth of the frame. This Letter from the Deep Sea shoot was an experience with extreme dedication from preparation to execution, and I hope this expression crossing dimensions can reach everyone in front of the screen.
