[Ganyu Cosplay] Genshin Impact's Cryo Character: A Wondrous Experiment with Two Skin Tone Styles

This Ganyu Cosplay session happened to involve two different photographers, resulting in two starkly contrasting directions for skin tone texture and overall mood. One featured flat, soft lighting on a gray floor for lying poses, while the other utilized dark, overhead hard light for high-contrast half-body close-ups. For makeup and styling early on, I chose a matte Blue hair style wig, carefully styling the small cowlick on top with a hairdryer multiple times until it stood firmly. The bangs were trimmed just right—shielding part of the forehead without poking the eyes—and when paired with the black-and-red curved horns, the entire head silhouette took shape immediately. The garment layering was complex: a black halter neck inner top accentuated collarbone lines, while the blue-and-white checkered detached sleeves were independent fabric pieces secured above the wrists with snap buttons, fluttering naturally as my arms moved. My favorite detail was the golden bell on the chest, hand-painted with metallic lacquer; its notable weight required careful attention during shooting to keep it from tilting. The white fabric across the abdomen featuring gold embroidery with red diamond geometric accents boasted three-dimensional raised embroidery that felt distinctly textured to the touch, balancing perfectly in color contrast against the red waist knots.

For the first setup, the photographer used softboxes and reflectors to evenly distribute light from overhead and the side onto a light gray concrete surface. Lying poses are actually harder to control than standing ones—with the back of the head pressing against the ground, the wig flattens easily, so I had to tilt my neck slightly to let hair strands scatter naturally. The arch of my raised arms was adjusted repeatedly to look relaxed while allowing the sleeve grid patterns to fully unfold, fingertips lightly touching as if catching falling snowflakes in the air. From this eye-level perspective, the soft lighting muted skin texture grain, softening shoulder lines and the black tank top's fitted silhouette, making the overall skin tone appear exceptionally fair, translucent, and smooth like mutton-fat jade.

The second set shifted tone entirely. The photographer removed softboxes in favor of single-side hard light paired with black light-absorbing cloth, leaving an almost completely black background with light catching only front and side contours. This lighting heavily tests makeup, as high-contrast shadows instantly magnify skin flaws. I intentionally enhanced T-zone highlights and swept a subtle coral-red eyeshadow onto lower eyelids to simulate a soft flushed look, while blue-gray contact lenses reflected a cool luster in low light. The oversized frilled hat served as the visual center, its broad white pleated fabric cradling the head like a cloud, with orange tassels dangling down one side that required manual support to hold angles. Black long gloves and white sheer sleeve cuffs created sharp light-and-dark cuts in the dark setting; paired with a subtly upturned smile, the entire presence shifted instantly from soft and cute to mysterious and relaxed.

Comparing these two photo sets reveals how even with the exact same wig and costume, differences in color temperature and exposure strategy produce drastically different skin textures. The former exudes cool, ethereal grace, while the latter offers rich, striking texture. During post-processing, I refrained from forcing a unified color palette, preserving each photographer's unique lighting logic to showcase their individual styles. The shooting process was physically demanding—holding core tension while lying down and constantly stabilizing the hat while standing—but seeing the final results made all the fatigue worthwhile. The costume's craftsmanship is meticulous: gold line embroidery glimmers under light while the black tank top's matte velvet texture avoids harsh reflections. I spent considerable time mastering the red rope knots, ultimately using a double-ring lock knot so they wouldn't unravel during movement. The stiff blue-and-white checkered sleeves provided great structural support without clinging to my arms.
