[Honoka Kosaka cosplay] Love Live! Brighter than sunshine: cheongsam unawakened

On an afternoon radiant like summer, I completed this shoot for Honoka Kosaka in her cheongsam unawakened look. My very first impression of this outfit was its intensely rich color palette. Large yellow blossoms bloom across a warm orange base, trimmed with white lace ruffles at the Mandarin collar and sleeve cuffs, creating a bright and sunny aesthetic that impeccably embodies the description 'brighter than sunshine.' To faithfully recreate the character's boundless vitality, I put plenty of thought into the wig and makeup. The orange mid-length hair was tied into a side ponytail accented with a yellow bow, while blue contact lenses gave the gaze a crisp, crystalline clarity. Eye makeup accentuated the lashes and aegyo sal under-eye rolls, accompanied by warm-toned blush to boost a healthy flush. Because the cheongsam features a form-fitting silhouette, I subtly adjusted the waistline during fittings to ensure movement was never constrained.

The shooting took place indoors, where sheer white curtains inscribed with Chinese calligraphy hung in the background, paired with a wooden tea table, sunflowers, and a round miniature folding screen to craft an atmosphere weaving traditional Chinese elegance with radiant summer energy. For props, I prepared a black folding fan and a white paper parasol patterned with bamboo leaves. To enrich visual dimension, the lower half featured White stockings paired with black chunky-heeled Mary Janes, a combination preserving youthful vivacity while adding refined polish.

For pose design, I referenced canon artwork featuring a playful gesture tapping an index finger lightly to the cheek while kicking one leg backward. Since the cheongsam's cut is slender, executing dynamic poses demanded careful control over body extension and the angle of the skirt slits to avoid wardrobe slips. For instance, when lifting one leg, maintaining a rock-solid center of gravity and controlling the forward tilt of the torso was crucial to elongate leg lines on camera without looking stiff. To capture fleeting dynamic motion, the photographer tweaked lighting setups multiple times, ultimately choosing warm, diffused soft light to bring out skin texture and vivid fabric colors at their peak. We rotated through various camera angles mid-shoot, from full-body perspectives to intimate bust close-ups. Keeping sharp focus throughout was essential; continuously radiating pure energy before the lens is physically demanding, and subtle micro-expressions profoundly shape the final outcome. The resulting photographs achieved my exact vision, preserving this summer glow across both framing and character mood.

Regarding the wig, keeping the side ponytail voluminous meant applying plenty of styling products to prevent strands from collapsing during poses. The traditional frog closures at the collar naturally encourage an upright, regal spine, imposing a graceful discipline on posture. Handling the folding fan also needed to synchronize with body movements—its opening angle and grip placement were referenced against original artwork countless times. The butterfly motifs on the black fan and the bamboo leaves on the white paper parasol showed beautiful texture under warm light, offering striking contrast against the orange cheongsam. The entire shoot was genuinely a physical workout; capturing dynamic, energetic moments meant running and hopping back and forth repeatedly. Touch-ups were done several times to keep the face fresh. Finally, selecting the best frames, retouching, and curating them culminated in this Summer cosplay set.
