How can a summer day be without you? To match this location shoot, my partner and I decided to capture the everyday vibe of Sakiko Toyokawa and Misumi Uika from "BanG Dream! Ave Mujica" on an early summer afternoon. We started preparing for this shoot more than half a month in advance. To accurately capture the characters' traits, a lot of thought went into trimming and styling the wigs. Misumi Uika's light blue long hair required very layered curls; I spent an entire afternoon processing it layer by layer with a curling iron, and the top part was specially braided and secured with a dark bow ribbon to make the styling more three-dimensional. On the other side, Sakiko Toyokawa's light golden bob might look simple, but trimming the blunt bangs and the curvature of the hair ends actually required very high precision. To ensure a natural fit, the wig net was tucked away meticulously. For makeup, we chose relatively high-saturation pink-toned eyeshadow and blush, paired with colored contacts to enlarge our eyes and maintain the refined feel of 2D characters. Meanwhile, the base makeup was kept as light and compliant as possible to present a translucent texture under natural light.
The shooting venue on the day was a cafe featuring off-white arched alcoves and wooden booth seats. This environment with a warm wooden tone was very suitable for a daily-style shoot. We brought straw hats, sunglasses, and that extremely cute chibi doll as accents. To capture the most natural light, we started shooting around 2 PM; during this time slot, the diffuse light outside the window was extremely soft, requiring no overly complex lighting equipment—just with the assistance of a reflector, the outlines of our faces could be clearly revealed.
Duo photography is actually very challenging in terms of composition; we needed to arrange the positioning of two people within a limited space while making sure neither blocked the other. The lens used was a 50mm focal length, with the aperture opened to around f/1.8, which not only ensured a certain background blur effect but also clearly captured the emotional details of both of us. When shooting poses like making peace signs and resting our chins on our hands, we repeatedly adjusted arm heights and chin tilt angles to avoid stiffness in the frame. The dessert on the plate also became a prop for our interaction; although it was posed, our natural expressions during casual chat were actually easier for the lens to record. For the shot with the heart gesture, to ensure that our hands formed a complete arc in the center of the frame, we calibrated our positions against the viewfinder several times while also balancing eye contact, striving to present an atmosphere closest to the bond between the characters.
During the process of portraying Sakiko Toyokawa and Misumi Uika, we constantly discussed how the atmospheric vibe between the two should be expressed. Sakiko Toyokawa's expression needs to carry a certain calmness and restraint, whereas Misumi Uika needs to manifest that gentle focus. During breaks, we also continuously discussed the characters' minor movements, such as the direction of gazes and finger placements, striving not to stop at just costume reproduction in front of the lens, but to get closer to the original settings in expression. The hot weather also brought a minor challenge to the shoot; thick wigs and costumes made the perceived temperature soar, forcing us to frequently hydrate and cool down during breaks, but as long as the lens was pointed at us, we immediately adjusted back to our best performance state.
Although the entire shooting process consumed quite a bit of energy, seeing the raw photos in the camera present the expected summer vibe made all the hard work feel worth it. Treating every styling detail with care and enjoying the process of creating together with a partner—this is precisely what makes cosplay so fascinating. That's all for today's sharing of these summer-limited memories.
