For this formal photoshoot of Honoka Kosaka cosplay from Love Live!, the theme I wanted to convey was time and bonds. The shoot was held in a solid-backdrop studio because I didn't want the background to distract from the subject; my goal was to focus all visual attention on the character's emotions and costume details. Authenticity for this Idol stage costume was something I cared deeply about: the pink-and-white skirt is adorned with red hearts, accented by an exaggerated bow at the back of the waist, and finished with yellow-and-white gradient flared bell sleeves, radiating pure energetic idol charisma. To add a delightful visual highlight, I pinned a mini Honoka plush doll atop my hair bun and carried an artificial Sunflower as a prop. These touches genuinely brought the camera frames to life.
Preparing this costume was quite a journey. The skirt has numerous layered tiers, requiring meticulous craftsmanship to seam together the outer pink textiles and inner white plush textures. For footwear, I paired white ankle socks with Mary Jane shoes; standing atop a white circular podium allowed my lower body silhouette to be showcased in full. During the shoot, I had "Bokutachi wa Hitotsu no Hikari" (We Are One Light / Bokuhika) playing on loop—the emotions in this song are just so intense. I sought to express stage tension through my movements, like waving with one hand raised high, or clasping both hands while bowing slightly. While seemingly simple, balancing in block heels on an elevated circular pedestal while keeping the skirt flared and posture stable severely tested my core strength and equilibrium in this Stage photography session.
Standing on the round platform, I visualized myself standing directly under stage spotlights. Holding the Sunflower gently against my chest and tilting my head down slightly, I couldn't help wondering: "Can time really turn back?" What touches me most about Honoka Kosaka is her relentless forward drive and her ability to inspire and lead everyone through any hardship. I poured that spirit into every gaze and gesture—whether playfully tapping my cheek with a finger, or radiating peace while half-kneeling on the pedestal. Though this was a static 2D shoot, I hoped my body language would let everyone feel that cohesive, radiant energy from the song.
The studio temperature wasn't high that day, yet wearing this layered outfit and wig while constantly adjusting my footing atop the pedestal brought out a light sweat. After every take, the makeup artist stepped in to tidy stray strands of hair along my forehead to keep the wig silhouette pristine, as well as fluff the skirt into an immaculate circular arc. The photographer also poured immense care into lighting: to complement my ginger-orange hair, the ambient light was kept warm amber, while lighting my face with luminous clarity. Retaining authentic skin textures without excessive airbrushing brought out the most vivid, lively anime aesthetic.
Looking back on the entire production—from sourcing fabrics to coordinating studio hours—every step was fueled by genuine love for this character. Slipping out of the costume at the end brought a bittersweet pang of reluctance. Cosplay is always a fleeting convergence between ourselves and the characters we adore; in the real world, we borrow their garments and words to convey a pure emotion born from fiction.
