Shooting this Honor of Kings Gongsun Li Smoke of Partings cosplay set coincided with a period of beautifully soft natural light. Against authentic mountain rocks and verdant foliage, the fluttering ribbons of the character were magnified with exquisite elegance in this ACG outdoor location shoot.
Starting from styling preparation, the hair for Smoke of Partings has rich depth—not plain black, but a deep midnight black infused with navy undertones. The small red beads on the hairpiece and the animal ears held intricate details, requiring considerable time in wig styling and makeup setting. The top features an adapted traditional Chinese cut; the red-and-white patterned chest motif paired with dark ruffled sleeves offered a visually pleasing contrast on camera. The gradient dip-dye on the skirt was a true test of tailoring craftsmanship—the smooth transition between teal-blue and grey-blue blended harmoniously into this wilderness setting, bringing natural flowing grace whenever I moved. For props, the custom staff was crafted with great care, featuring a dimensional bird with outstretched wings that held balanced weight in hand; although spinning it took effort, it was indispensable for visual impact. The bamboo-ribbed paper parasol introduced later was a standout highlight—its delicate cloud patterns, when opened behind me, cleanly framed the messy rocky backdrop like a natural picture border.
The shooting process had its share of unexpected challenges. The mountain rocks were slippery, making balance difficult, yet shooting on such rugged terrain perfectly captured the aloof, standalone aura inherent to this Smoke of Partings cosplay skin. For facial expression, I sought to convey a hidden sharpness beneath a gentle smile—echoing the lore of smiling while harboring steel within, looking gentle on the surface while holding an unyielding edge. The seamless synergy with the props, makeup team, and photographer @ photographer was invaluable; compositions avoided forced perspective compression in favor of effortless, sweeping stretch. This natural outdoor setting of gravel and green leaves, bathed in soft diffuse light, suited traditional Chinese aesthetics impeccably in this Cosplay photography project.
In post-processing, I refrained from drastic manipulations, focusing on refining facial contours and skin tones while preserving authentic fabric textures and the sheer translucence of the flowing ribbons. Though exhausting, the final photos achieved that genuine magic of breaking the dimensional barrier into reality, making it a deeply fulfilling creative journey in Honor of Kings.
