[Gongsun Li Cosplay] Who Understands the Magic of Adding an Artificial Light on an Overcast Day?

The lighting conditions on the day of this Cosplay photoshoot for Gongsun Li's Smoke of Partings skin in Honor of Kings were actually quite intriguing—it happened to be completely overcast. Many photographers feel that overcast lighting is too flat to produce dynamic results, but I find that an overcast sky essentially functions as a gigantic, natural softbox. To cut through the somber flatness of the overcast ambiance, we introduced a single warm artificial light source on set.

We spent considerable time dialing in the placement and angle of this light, ultimately locking it in as a side rim light (kicker). It not only illuminated the layered strands of Gongsun Li's deep blue wig with luminous edge definition, but also made the shimmering gold embroidery and crimson strapping across the garment pop with rich texture. Supported by this deliberate artificial light, an organic chiaroscuro contrast formed between the face and background, immediately conjuring that quiet, ethereal chill.

Regarding the wardrobe and styling, the Smoke of Partings attire is packed with lavish details. The primary white fabric is woven with subtle jacquard patterns, while the looping gold motifs across the collar and bodice take on striking sculptural depth under reflective light. To harmonize with the chilly elegance of this concept, I intensified the depth of my eye makeup; combined with the deep blue wig, gilded hair rings, and scarlet bead tassels, the primary visual focus was anchored across the upper torso. The sleeves are crafted from a lustrous, semi-sheer blue textile that casts a gorgeous pearlescent glow along its illuminated contours.

During the session, I leaned into leaning poses and backward glances. For instance, posing before a wooden door with one hand resting gently against the frame allowed a subtle reflection of my silhouette to emerge in the glass pane, infusing the composition with narrative nuance. The stacked gold bangles on my wrist were an intentional accent, catching specular highlights under the side light. The key difficulty across these poses was maintaining an elongated, graceful posture while projecting the character's relaxed, effortless composure.

My biggest takeaway from this set is that regardless of weather, truly understanding and harnessing light allows you to craft deeply satisfying cosplay work. Investing that extra effort into lighting during the shoot opens up vastly more creative leeway in post-production. I look forward to experimenting with even more diverse chiaroscuro arrangements in future shoots.
