To get straight to the conclusion, the Autofocus fisheye lens I tried out recently is exceptionally well-suited for this Persona 5 shoot featuring Ann Takamaki. Wide-angle lenses feature exaggerated perspective relationships, bringing a built-in edge-stretching effect and creating an intense sense of spatial depth when pushed close to the foreground. This visual punch makes it far easier than standard lenses to instantly leap out of reality into Anime-style photography.
From an optical standpoint, a fisheye lens breaks away from human visual habits, rendering scenes through an extreme perspective. This requires absolute clarity on what focal point you wish to convey during the shoot. If the subject is placed near the frame edges, they suffer severe stretching, so I intentionally positioned the character dead-center or slightly above, keeping the composition visually dynamic yet aesthetically pleasing.
The shoot took place on a steel bridge at night. The surrounding iron structures curved outward under the fisheye distortion to form a robust wrap-around enclosure, punctuated by red railings and white streetlamps that created striking geometric framing. These lines harmonized naturally with the character's red-and-white color palette, looking as though they were custom-designed for this specific concept.
Regarding the gear, to accurately capture the character's traits, I selected long golden curls paired with blue contact lenses, red-framed glasses, and little devil horn hair clips. The outfit consisted of a red long-sleeve cardigan over a white camisole with red lace accents, distressed denim shorts, and heels, complemented by a black whip prop, giving the silhouette immense recognizability. The rosy lipstick and blush echoed the wardrobe, fitting her mischievous, energetic little-devil persona perfectly.
During practical shooting, to maximize the fisheye's unique visual impact, I experimented heavily with foreground framing. For example, holding the red-framed glasses right in front of the lens magnified them into a blurred red halo while keeping the subject's facial features sharp, creating a brilliant scale contrast. Alternatively, reaching out toward the glass leveraged arm perspective distortion to inject momentum. Low-angle upward shots and crouches showcased body curves while capitalizing on foreground, midground, and background layers.
For subject performance, the wardrobe leans breezy, making close-up wide shots ideal for highlighting leg lines and bodily proportions. Poses like squatting or perching on railings elongated the legs to the maximum, satisfying mainstream aesthetic expectations for such character designs. Meanwhile, the foreground whip or stretching hand motions added dynamic motion to otherwise static stances.
Since the session took place at night, lighting was vital. Utilizing roadside lamps and distant background ambiance, I deployed off-camera strobes to illuminate the subject. Exposure management required keeping the background dark enough to make the subject pop. Opening up the aperture for bokeh spheres blurred out the background, driving the final image texture strikingly close to an anime illustration. Particular care was given to retaining shadow detail in the steel bridge structures to avoid absolute pitch black, adding rich tonal layers.
In post-production, the focus centered on controlling color mood: crushing shadows, lifting the subject, boosting the visual purity of red-and-white tones, and shifting shadows toward a cool blue to amplify the protagonist's vitality. Because of the Autofocus fisheye lens, peripheral stretching is inevitable, so centering the subject avoided facial distortion while retaining dynamic limb extension.
Though fisheye lenses can challenge beginners regarding distortion control, leveraging their perspective-warping traits delivers immense fun and dramatic tension. For portraying characters with a playful, mischievous streak, it amplifies anime-style visual textures while maximizing physical assets. Success hinged heavily on early comprehension of lens characteristics and smooth on-site communication.
Combining foreground framing, lighting, makeup, and styling in the nocturnal backdrop brought this Ann Takamaki session to life. The shooting experience was exceptionally smooth, and post-processing paired effortlessly with this lens. Ultimately, this gear shines for characters possessing lively or devilish traits when paired with night scenes. The final gallery reflects these natural lens characteristics without forced execution.
