For this Chengdu World Line Comic Con, I cosplayed Justina Gu from NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, wearing her classic modified white qipao. From hair and makeup styling to finalizing the outfit, numerous details underwent continuous adjustments. To achieve a voluminous, textured silver-white high ponytail, I intentionally built up volume at the roots and tied it with a light blue ribbon, aiming to visually recreate her aloof, crisp aesthetic. For the eyes, I chose pale blue contact lenses and deepened the eye makeup; since Justina Gu naturally carries an unapproachable, chilly aura, the eyeliner was elongated. Combined with fair cool-toned base makeup, this delivered distinct looks between daytime natural lighting and nighttime artificial illumination at the convention.
The costume's details served as the core of the entire look. A sleeveless white qipao is notoriously demanding on both body shape and lighting. Its stand collar and frog closures are thoroughly traditional, yet the neckline and chest feature exquisite golden plant embroidery complemented by gold piping along the edges—a gold-and-white color palette that captured flash photography brilliantly at night. To introduce visual layering, I paired it with white long gloves spliced with lace; the upper arms featured sheer cutout designs that seamlessly blended with the sleeveless dress. Below, the high slit fully accentuated leg lines, so I opted for sheer black stockings with subtle patterns, paired with white platform high heels. The stark contrast between the black stockings and the white qipao visually elongated the legs and created a striking impact against the dark night. Gold tassels and delicate chains dangled from the waist, producing a crisp metallic clinking sound when moving, adding dynamic vitality to walking tracking shots and glance-back poses.
Capturing this night photo set was far from easy. After concluding the daytime convention schedule, we took advantage of the darkness to scout clean backdrops around the convention center. With an entirely pitch-black background and scattered streetlights, the photographer used powerful flash strobes to crush the ambient background and highlight character contours and fabric textures. Consequently, every frame required holding a rigid, stable pose. Gestures like resting a hand on my hair or lifting the hem while balancing in high heels tested physical stamina and core strength. Justina Gu requires an upright, poised posture, demanding a calm, restrained facial expression despite sore legs. Fortunately, the wind was cooperative, lending natural flow to my ponytail and skirt, yielding snapshots with perfectly curved wisps of hair.
Navigating the venue in this full ensemble was equally demanding. Adjusting lace glove details in rest areas or crouching to check high heels frequently led to encounters with friendly attendees. Receiving compliments for this NARAKA: BLADEPOINT white qipao cosplay made every late night spent altering the garment and tuning accessories entirely worthwhile. For cosplayers, bringing a character to life is an iterative process of aligning physical condition with costume materials—especially with modern qipao cuts, where balancing dynamic pose ranges while preventing fabric distortion or snagging demands patience and experience. This collection documents my understanding and portrayal of Justina Gu within this distinct setting.
