[Hanya cosplay] Backlit Convention Photos from Holiday Anime Expo: Not in Top Form, but Did My Best

During the holiday anime expo, I finally brought out this Hanya cosplay set that I had been preparing for a while. Taking advantage of the bustling crowds at the convention, I shot a few sets of convention photos first, and while the visual inspiration was still fresh in my mind, I quickly finished retouching them to share as part of my Coser daily life.

To be honest, the shooting process for this set was much more troublesome than I anticipated. Perhaps because I hadn't worn colored contact lenses in a long time, combined with using a previously stocked pair that I realized on-site had slightly expired. Shortly after putting them in, my eyes began feeling dry, photophobic, and deeply uncomfortable, constantly feeling like a foreign object was scratching inside. I couldn't tell whether it was psychological or real discomfort, but it felt extremely dry. I endured it throughout the shoot, which admittedly resulted in a rather sub-par condition in front of the lens, failing to fully convey Hanya's calmest, most decisive demeanor. I sincerely apologize to the photographer and everyone here.

That said, I loved the details of this costume during preparation. The deep blue base tone paired with red-and-black accessories and gold edging gave it a great texture—subdued yet imposing. The hairstyle in particular, with long straight silver-gray hair topped by her signature red-and-black horns, initially had me worried that an off angle would look unnatural; fixing them so they wouldn't tilt during shooting took quite some time. Then there were the portable props—the long calligraphy brush and the scroll with mysterious runes—holding them in hand instantly pulled me into that judge-like persona. Although the venue was noisy and crowded, with passersby occasionally bumping into us, standing before the lens I still tried hard to project Hanya's cool detachment and aloofness from worldly affairs.

The environment for these convention photos was quite special—we found a spot beneath a ceiling skylight. Sunlight streamed down from above, creating an intense highlight and rim-light effect. Sitting on the grayish-white rug, the photographer skillfully captured this natural light to set the tone for the series. That direct overhead beam coated the edges of the wig and the red horns with a delicate luminous halo, while the convention background behind was cast in deep shadow, instantly creating a theatrical drama reminiscent of a stage play. Honestly, during studio shoots I usually ask the photographer to adjust the lighting setups, but this spontaneous backlighting in a live convention setting brought an incredible on-site atmosphere. Even though my eyes were protesting by then, capturing such lighting texture was an unexpected pleasant surprise.

In terms of posture and composition, we experimented with various seated arrangements. Seated poses actually showcase the costume's tailored design well, particularly the skirt hem and leg lines. The outfit features an open back combined with a high-slit hem, paired with black high-heeled sandals. Crouching or sitting on the floor in high heels is no easy feat, but to project an authoritative aura at the visual focal point, I did my best to maintain posture. After shooting for about half an hour, I could no longer endure the stinging pain in my eyes and had to pause to remove the contacts; looking back, it's still a pity that I couldn't shoot more dynamic, walking full-body shots.

During post-processing, I deliberately restrained my edits, avoiding excessive filters to preserve the raw lighting ambiance—especially that beam of light descending from above, which fit the character's persona so well. Through these Anime-style photography photos, I hope viewers can see another perspective of Hanya's core essence as she holds the judge's brush and calmly evaluates all things. Although I'm currently exporting photos with bloodshot eyes and fatigue, I'm still very pleased with the atmosphere captured in the final shots. Despite my poor physical condition, this convention photos shoot was a memorable experience, and I'm deeply grateful to the photographer on-site for capturing so many stunning moments when I was far from my best. In any case, bringing this character styling to life in reality is already deeply meaningful.
