This shoot was captured using a Canon R6 Mark II paired with a Tamron 35mm SP lens. The shooting time was chosen between dusk and nightfall, primarily to capture the fleeting transition between the warm and cool tones of the sky. The location was an outdoor mountain meadow with rugged terrain, featuring uneven grass and gravel underfoot. Combined with the arrangement of thin hemp ropes and a lantern, it created a subtly mysterious atmosphere.
Since it was a night shoot, the high-ISO performance of the R6 Mark II provided tremendous convenience. To ensure image clarity, I kept the ISO within a reasonable range, while using a wider aperture on the 35mm lens to maintain an adequate shutter speed. The lantern was the core light source in the frame, serving as both key light and fill light in the low-light environment. This single-light approach effectively highlights the subject's facial features and costume details, while creating a striking contrast between the warm yellow glow and the cool blue night sky, maximizing the visual impact and ambient mood.
For the outfit, I chose a black-and-white dress rich with lace, ruffles, and a wide-brimmed witch hat, revealing intricate details even in dim lighting. The white over-the-knee stockings paired with black platform shoes effectively elongated the leg lines. Throughout the shoot, the 35mm wide angle was also used to establish the environment, framing the backlit clouds and distant mountains in the background. To prevent the skirt and ropes from getting caught on wild grass, every pose was adjusted with care. The second shot of raising the lantern toward the camera tested my patience, as balancing exposure between the hand and the face was tricky; after trying several angles, I found that letting the soft side light from the lampshade hit the face effectively prevented blown-out highlights. The texture of the final image comes from the authentic response of the live lighting, without excessive post-processing. Although shooting on the grassy slope at night was tiring and chilly in the evening breeze, seeing the lantern under the night sky, the glowing reflections in the clouds, and the gorgeous silhouette of the costume fully brought to life made all the effort worthwhile. I hope everyone can feel the character's distinct aura and the unique charm of a night portrait through this photo set.
