This Rumia cosplay photoset was in the works for quite a long time—from booking the studio to completing the edits, I finally managed to wrap up my sixth complete set before the new year. Whenever this character comes to mind, the line that echoes unbidden is that delightfully quirky phrase at the start: 'an adorable fire axe,' delivering instant, maximum contrast. To capture our envisioned ambiance, we chose the Manke Shiguang Studio. The set design there was extraordinarily elaborate: the floor was strewn with red rose petals, arranged alongside crimson red spider lilies, skull props, and gilded picture frames. Dressed in a white collared shirt, black pinafore dress, white tights, and Mary Jane shoes, the very moment I lay down inside the picture frame, I instantly tapped into that feeling of a maiden imprisoned within an oil painting.
Shooting lying down is actually a tremendous test of core strength. To make the composition look graceful, my neck and waist had to remain suspended and engaged, and we rehearsed the gesture of clasping hands over my chest multiple times. Chunqiufen put immense thought into the lighting setup: to match the red-and-black color palette, the key light was kept quite dim, focusing primarily on illuminating my face and the white ruffles of my outfit, while crisply tracing the edges of the white tights. The red roses and white tights created a powerful visual contrast within that shadowy setting.
The prop work was another core highlight of this photoshoot. When holding the blade props, I had to keep my facial expression carefully measured—neither overly menacing nor excessively sweet—to maintain that natural coexistence of innocence and danger inherent to the character. Because this was a dark gothic studio shoot, the post-processing phase was also deeply painstaking. Huojimian stayed up late into the night with me fine-tuning the tonal curves, ensuring the deep reds in the shadows wouldn't turn muddy while preserving a luminous, translucent skin tone. The sheen of the fabric and the fine layering of the chiffon also had to be brought out bit by bit.
I am genuinely grateful for the dedication of every partner who helped bring this Touhou Project set to fruition. From shaping the wig to refining the makeup details, every effort was made to faithfully recreate that mysterious, high-tension atmosphere synonymous with the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Seeing the seamless harmony of frames, skulls, and roses in the final photos made all the aches and sore muscles from that day feel completely worthwhile.
