Shooting Remilia from Touhou Project this time, my overall concept was to break away from the conventional grand, combat-oriented feel and focus more on presenting her daily temperament as a vampire nobleāone that is slightly detached and melancholic. For the wig, I picked a cool-toned shade of blue and cut it in layers to keep it from looking too heavy. To complement the red-eyed makeup look, I slightly elongated the outer corners of the eyes to retain a touch of the character's sharp edge. In terms of the outfit, I chose a dress with a white base paired with dark red bows; the tulle material was layered multiple times, and its naturally draping texture creates very soft grayscale transitions under the lighting, offering more breathing room than pure black.
During the shoot, a dark background was intentionally used, with a single-sided softbox casting the silhouette to let the white and red of the costume pop in the dark tones while preserving the translucent glow of the skin. The white picture frame and roses in the back were prepared by the prop crew; originally we planned to create a narrative, but in the end, we felt they worked great simply as visual embellishments. The blue gemstone on the pendant necklace perfectly echoes the wig, locking down the overall color tone.
This makeup and styling look actually has very high requirements for texture, especially the grain of the tulle and lace. In post-processing, I didn't apply heavy sharpening, retaining a bit of a soft-focus effect to fit her non-human setting. The ruffles on the headpiece were also adjusted for angles multiple times to ensure they wouldn't look cluttered in profile shots. Throughout the shoot, I kept communicating with the photographer regarding light placement; the highlights shouldn't be too harsh, and the shadow sections needed to retain sufficient layers, especially the dark details inside the skirt pleats.
Characters from Touhou Project have always offered a vast space for derivative creations. This time, I experimented with a relatively delicate and realistic style, hoping to showcase a side of Remilia that differs from everyday hand-drawn illustrations or anime. After organizing dozens of negatives after the shoot, I am quite satisfied with the compositions and expressions in these final selected photos, especially the drifting gaze, which aligns perfectly with her lazy yet mysterious temperament. The costume accessories and details also hold up well under close inspectionāthe red and white color scheme is truly a classic.
