[Marisa Kirisame Cosplay] Gensokyo Daily Life of a Touhou Project Fanon Witch

Let's cut straight to the point. This photoshoot features Marisa Kirisame in a Touhou Project fanon style, with costumes and props redesigned based on the original worldview, focusing heavily on blending Lolita elements.

The top and skirt hem make extensive use of white lace and ruffles, breaking away from the relatively crisp apron style of the original design and steering toward a sweet Western-mansion magician aesthetic. The hat serves as the visual anchor of this look; its extremely wide brim combined with layered sheer tulle trim creates immense presence. During shooting, I had to repeatedly adjust my head angle to keep the giant brim from obscuring my face. I chose a golden-blonde long curly wig, which echoes the exaggerated hat brim nicely, ensuring my face receives good key lighting even beneath the hat's shadow.

For props, the focus was on recreating her iconic broom. Starting with a wooden broom handle, I added straw clusters and white ribbon bows to keep the tone consistent with the dress. The curved wand held in my other hand served as a subtle accessory to enhance narrative depth. Aside from flight posing, the brownish-red leather pouch at my waist was also carefully coordinated; it visually anchors the lower half with dark edging so the predominantly white dress doesn't look too floaty, while adding a daily travel-style grounded feel.

The footwear and socks combination is one of the highlights of this Cosplay outfit. Skipping common pointed heels, I opted for black platform Oxfords with metal buckles, paired with pure white mid-calf slouch socks. This Japanese platform element not only grounds the lower half to balance the skirt's lightness, but also brings overall saturation closer to 2D anime illustrations. Moreover, these shoes were extremely stable on site, providing solid support when posing for mid-air shots.

Selecting the location involved a bit of unconventional thinking. We chose an outdoor covered corridor with modern architectural geometry, featuring neat gray brick flooring and a dark slatted ceiling. This cold, industrial background creates a striking visual contrast with the white lace ruffles and oversized hat. The lighting that day was soft, overcast high-contrast light, ideal for showcasing skin texture and fabric quality, requiring only minor post-processing adjustments to white balance for a clean final look.

What required the most precision during shooting was the feeling of balance and exertion. The broom prop actually has no load-bearing function, so I relied entirely on calf and foot strength to hold the mid-air pose, using the voluminous skirt hem to hide the foot leverage points and simulate a hovering, flying magic effect. The photographer deliberately set a very low camera angle, leveraging a wide-angle lens's perspective features to fully separate the spatial layers of the hat, broom, and skirt hem, giving the frame an exaggerated yet dynamic tension. We tried five or six straddling angles before settling on this composition that showcases the full skirt shape while elongating body proportions.

In post-processing, virtually no exaggerated warping was done, fully respecting the spatial perspective captured during the shoot while making minor color calibrations to whites and skin tones. As a fan of Touhou Project, this fanon Marisa Kirisame is my personal attempt at a fresh expression of the character. Rather than prioritizing strict adherence to original lore, it focuses on interpreting a sweet fantasy Lolita witch style that the character can comfortably pull off. Judging by the execution of fabrics and props, it achieved the desired effect.
