Today I'm sharing this collaborative set of Ruan Mei cosplay, which was shot at the "Moonlight over the Lotus Pond" scene in Daju Mansion.
This outfit features rich layers, with peacock blue paired with white water sleeves and a shawl. Together with a short hairstyle intentionally dyed with cyan-blue tips and white 3D flower accessories, the overall look exudes a clear and cool, aloof texture. In terms of makeup, costume, and prop details, I slightly adjusted the position of the petal hair ornament, hoping that placing it on the forehead would better fit the character's ethereal temperament.
To retain the raw approachability of the location, we specially included a barefoot look during the shoot, while also matching it with stiletto heels to correspond to the needs of different atmospheres and compositions. For instance, the shots by the waterside rockery, paired with dry ice mist to create a watery ambiance, look closer to nature and completely detached from the mundane world. On the other hand, the photos sitting on a wooden stool while holding the round fan offer an extra layer of aloof elegance. The red winter-sweet branches and golden hollowed-out lanterns arranged on-site, set against the lattice windows under warm lighting, formed an excellent contrast with the cool-toned clothing, directly amplifying the storytelling tension of the frame.
In fact, this collaborative package shoot was a true test of posing. It required maintaining the dignity of a classical beauty while showcasing agility between the spiral staircase and the wooden platform. Therefore, I put a lot of effort into my posture, meticulously controlling the angle of every turn and gaze. Not many props were used, mainly just the red plum round fan and the flower branches. The fewer the props, the higher the requirement for facial expression control and bone structure. To fit the cool and aloof persona, I intentionally held back my smile to give my gaze a more piercing quality. Light was also a vital element for this shoot; the photographer utilized backlighting filtering through white tulle to cast a soft halo along the edges of my hair and shoulders, enveloping the image in a hazy poetry, capturing the essence of a beautiful Chinese-style girl.
From the repeated refinement and fittings of the costume in the early stage, to the precise control of breathing and posture on set, as well as the rendering of the color atmosphere in post-processing, the entire team worked hard to recreate that sense of cold aloofness interwoven with a celestial aura. Overall, this collaborative set succeeded in creating an atmospheric portrait, where the Moonlight over the Lotus Pond and Ruan Mei's styling shared a coincidental harmony in style. I hope this visual presentation conveys the unique aesthetic beauty blending traditional style cosplay and fantasy through Xianxia photography.
