Slipping into this blue and white dress matching the Genius Society look and holding that traditional string instrument embellished with pink floral branches, the moment I stood still inside the exhibition hall, it felt as though I could truly hear that reminder about 'pausing your breath.' As a Ruan Mei cosplayer in Honkai: Star Rail, I shot a set of convention photos inside Hall 5 today and am here to share some subtle details and shooting experiences behind this look.

Let's first talk about the outfit's texture. The inner deep blue fitted garment features subtle gold line tracing and traditional-style cloud prints. The chest cut is meticulously crafted—offering great structure while maintaining comfort—and creates a lovely visual harmony with the pearl necklace at my collarbone and the velvet wide choker in matching tones. The outer layer is paired with a pure white semi-transparent off-the-shoulder shawl; this light, airy material breaks the heaviness of the deep blue, adding a touch of effortless grace and ethereal charm. Since the string instrument prop is quite large, I had to pay extra attention to maintaining the bust line silhouette when adjusting shoulder straps and garments to prevent shifting while walking around the convention.

The wig and makeup were top priorities for bringing this character to life. The wig uses a gray-blue base with a gradient highlight from deep blue to cyan-blue at the tips, along with layered bangs. To achieve that fluffy yet tidy canonical texture, I spent considerable time padding the crown and shaping the hair strands' curves. Paired with light ice-blue contacts, the overall makeup emphasized upturned eyeliner, aiming to convey a gaze through the lens that feels rational, elegant, and filled with a mysterious sense of distance. The blue glossy gloves were another subtle highlight, not only non-slip and convenient for holding the instrument, but also reflecting varied textures under light.

Now onto the string instrument prop itself. It carries substantial weight and occupies a huge proportion of the overall look. To recreate a texture resembling wood grain mixed with porcelain enamel, I carefully inspected the tuning pegs on the scroll, the golden Ruyi patterns on the soundboard, as well as the pink-and-white cherry blossom branch attached to the neck. The blue-and-white color scheme accented with gold and pink looks exquisitely charming. During shooting, to show harmony between person and instrument in the seated pose of Photo 2, I intentionally adjusted my grip position, letting the instrument rest naturally beside my leg—highlighting the tailored fit without appearing cramped.

At the convention, Hall 5 offered fantastic high-window natural lighting. The blend of natural light and edge rim lighting made the golden badge ornament on my neck pop brilliantly. What mattered most to me during shooting was capturing the exact temperament. Recalling that line, 'When you say my name, please don't forget the pause in breath between,' I intentionally slowed my breathing facing the lens, refining my hand gestures so my gaze rested steadily on the camera, imparting a sense of calm observation. The white shawl and dark blue dress paired with a high-slit hem nicely highlighted my leg lines while seated, while the chest shaping lent a soft yet empowering intellectual beauty.

Preparing for such an intricate cosplay always demands immense groundwork—from securing wig caps and applying spirit gum to transporting props and lugging bags across the venue. Though exhausting, the moment lights turn on and everything comes together with hand-crafted makeup and hair, a profound sense of fulfillment washes over me. On-site convention photography brought challenges too: holding a heavy prop continuously while changing poses and managing facial expressions—all while ensuring the instrument stays aligned and gloves remain wrinkle-free—was a test of stamina and poise. Fortunately, the final photos captured both the intricate flower branches and the blue-gold layered richness of the dress, beautifully preserving my impression of this character. I hope this set of convention photos lets everyone feel the thoughtful details I prepared.
