I'm here to submit my 'homework' for this 'Snow Blooming on Plum Paper' theme. I especially love the design of this costume, which combines neo-Chinese charm with the character's cool, aloof vibe. The off-shoulder design of the upper body paired with white petal-shaped edges actually took a lot of effort during pattern making and sewing; to give those semi-transparent sheer gauze sleeves a light and fluttering feel with every gesture, the inner lining was chosen to be a very skin-friendly material. The neck ornament at the collar with green gems and tassels was also custom-made by hand using similar materials, and the golden embroidery on the waist—every detail had to be nailed down precisely.
During the shoot, to match the huge glowing moon backdrop behind me, we put a lot of thought into lighting. Cool white backlight outlined the subject's contours wonderfully, while the Chinese-style lanterns on both sides provided warm-toned facial fill light, making the texture produced by the warm-cool contrast exceptionally translucent. The musical instrument in my hand is a ruan. To capture that focus and elegance unique to a researcher, I practiced the ruan-holding posture for a long time. The pressure of my fingers resting on the strings and the fixed point of my gaze required repeated adjustments.
Regarding the sitting posture question many friends asked, the wooden beauty's couch (meiren kao) and white plush cushion chosen this time really tested my posture. I deliberately chose a crossed-leg sitting posture, which not only visually lengthens the leg lines but also makes the overall posture look more dignified. When doing similar slim-fitting cosplay outfits, everyone can also try side-sitting with crossed legs, putting slightly more weight on one leg while relaxing and dropping the shoulders, so the curves captured will look much more natural. The legs were paired with white stockings featuring pearl leg rings and dark blue high heels; the lace edge and pearl anklet at the ankle are the finishing touches, adding some exquisite layered details.
Among the props this time, there is also a semi-transparent round fan painted with red plum blossoms, which, combined with the artificial cherry blossoms and red maples arranged in the background, creates a quiet atmosphere surrounded by plants. The semi-transparent black gauze with ink calligraphy handwriting spread out on the wooden floor also gives the frame a bit more of a traditional Chinese foundation. Actually, the preparation period for this set of photos was longer than everyone imagines; from selecting the theme 'Snow Blooming on Plum Paper', I had been conceptualizing the imagery in my mind. The character Ruan Mei herself carries an aloof detachment untainted by worldly dust, yet she also possesses an ultimate focus on life. Therefore, during scene setup, we deliberately avoided overly complex and flamboyant colors, choosing instead large areas of peacock blue and pure white as main tones, supplemented by gold and silver threads in various details.
The wig processing was also a major difficulty. To achieve the effect of short black hair mixed with turquoise highlights, adorned with tiny white flowers, the wig stylist spent a massive amount of time thinning and styling it. In makeup design, I heavily emphasized the layering of the eye makeup, wearing striking blue-green contact lenses to restore the character's designated eye color, layering a slightly reddish eyeshadow at the outer corners of the eyes, and pairing it with a vibrant lip color so that the face maintained a healthy complexion even in a cool-lit environment. The long blue gloves were also a challenge; because the material is relatively smooth, it tended to slip when holding the round fan and the instrument neck, requiring clever finger strength to control. The whole shooting process was extremely joyful. In this scene, it felt as if I could truly experience the state of mind: 'All things temporarily rest, calming the heart to observe the subtle rhythms of life.'
