Cosplay photoshoot archive. This set of Dongfang Xianyun photos from "What's Wrong with My Big Brother" that we shot at Zhanyuan turned out amazing, with a high success rate for both the overall atmosphere and lighting. The character possesses distinct personality traits; we put a lot of effort into the early styling, from the black-and-white hair color combination to his signature high ponytail. For the outfit, we chose a textured white inner shirt paired with a blue-purple outer robe and waistband to recreate his carefree and neat style as much as possible. The red collar tie serves as an accent, making the overall visual look more striking.
The shooting location was chosen at Zhanyuan, where the Chinese garden landscape and bamboo groves perfectly fit the ancient setting of the character. Originally, we planned to rely solely on the depth of field to highlight the characters. However, during the actual shoot, the natural light in the courtyard, along with elements like wooden pillars and rockeries, provided an excellent sense of spatial layering for our Garden photography. We experimented with solo shots holding a blade to showcase the character's combat prowess, and also captured story-driven, interactive duo shots—such as the white-haired character and the black-haired character gazing at each other and interacting—to recreate the relaxed vibe of their daily life.
For the makeup and styling, we opted for a look that enhances the complexion, paired with warm red lip tones to balance the coldness that white hair can easily bring. The wig was intentionally trimmed and styled beforehand to make the high ponytail's lines look more natural and avoid a heavy appearance. The photographer handled the lighting beautifully, avoiding harsh shadows and instead utilizing soft natural light to clearly bring out the texture of the hair strands and clothing fabrics. This lighting style is well-suited for a Traditional style cosplay character shoot.
In post-processing, we didn't over-pursue a CG aesthetic; instead, we preserved the real texture, light, and shadow of the skin and clothes, focusing only on basic environmental color uniformity and grading. This satisfies the aesthetic appeal of a finished photoshoot while giving the work a living, natural portrait feel—after all, cosplay itself is a cultural expression of real people bringing characters to life. Everyone was in great shape on the day of the shoot, and the team chemistry was excellent; whether it was the coordinated duo poses or the solo stances, everyone found the right rhythm. This set of "What's Wrong with My Big Brother" Dongfang Xianyun photos met our expectations in terms of costume accuracy, prop details, and overall quality, making it a truly worthwhile creative experience to archive.
