Night shooting during the Yozakura season is a play of light and shadow, and producing this set of Asuka Cosplay in a Kimono was full of challenges. Since I chose to wear a Kimono to cosplay Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion, I made several adjustments to the hair and makeup styling. Asuka's iconic red twintails are the soul of the look; this time, to complement the drape of the Kimono and the nighttime scenery, I chose a softer wig shade and avoided stiffening it excessively with hairspray so it could sway more naturally in the night breeze. For makeup, because the lanterns cast warm yellow light at night, orange-toned warm blush and deep red lip glaze looked the most flattering and skin-brightening on camera.
This set was shot by the water beneath the Yozakura, where the blue-hour sky and water reflections provided an exquisite backdrop. Standing under the lanterns during the shoot, the warm light hit my face just right, creating a striking warm-cold contrast against the deep blue sky behind me—this is the most dazzling aspect of these photos. The photographer used a wide aperture to turn distant lanterns into gorgeous bokeh light orbs, enhancing the dreamy, hazy atmosphere of the shots.
The difficulty of shooting in a Kimono lies in restricted movement; Kimono poses call for more restraint and elegance, unlike the broad arm and leg motions when wearing a combat suit. To maintain the character's temperament while matching the Kimono aesthetic, I adopted a posture of slightly tilting my head toward the camera in Photo 1, and chose a peace-sign gesture in Photo 3 to complement this relaxed, languid vibe. The red plum-blossom print on the Kimono created a wonderful visual harmony with Asuka's signature vivid red.
During the cherry blossom season in Japan (Life in Japan), the crowds are massive, so doing a cosplay shoot requires avoiding peak pedestrian flow—usually scoping out camera positions before sunset. In the brief intervals when tourists moved away, I had to quickly get into character. The temperature by the water at night was very low, and maintaining a smile in the freezing wind while wearing a thin Kimono was a huge test of physical endurance. If you also want to try shooting cosplay under the Yozakura, definitely bring a coat and heat packs, along with a portable fill light so your skin tone won't appear overly yellow under pure lantern lighting. I truly enjoyed the feeling of playing the character amidst real landscapes, and I'm very grateful for the photographer's patient guidance.
