This photoshoot ran from morning until sunset, and we deliberately caught the softest golden hour light as the sun dipped down, setting a warm tone for the entire scene. I had always thought that a European-style colonnade featuring classical carved stone pillars and natural vines would be ideal for capturing Surtr's temperament from Arknights—especially the Ambience Synesthesia styling that balances elegance with power. Taking advantage of the creator support program, I brought along my frequent collaborator photographer for an on-site scouting session.
To match the character's image in players' hearts, I chose a high-saturation red wig this time. Trimming the hair flow and layers took considerable time to prevent it from frizzing or losing shape under the outdoor breeze. The branch-antler headpiece was also specially reinforced so it wouldn't shift when turning sideways or tilting my head. The costume centers on a pure white chiffon gown, layered with a metallic gold corset and arm guards to enhance depth and visual weight. This textural contrast was particularly dramatic in the viewfinder: the white chiffon appeared airy and translucent in backlighting, while the gold ornaments reflected a gorgeous warm glow under direct sunlight. The prop was her iconic polearm weapon. To achieve a cool, sharp presence, controlling the grip strength was key—neither too loose nor overly stiff. Poses like resting the weapon across the shoulder or pointing it diagonally forward were calibrated through numerous angle adjustments to maintain commanding presence while balancing the compositional proportion between person and prop.
The natural foliage at the location also provided fantastic foregrounds and backgrounds. The lush broadleaf tree on the right acted as a natural matte, forming an invisible frame with the white stone pillars—this natural frame composition instantly pulls visual focus onto the character. When selecting the light, we intentionally avoided harsh midday glare, waiting until after 4 PM when the sunlight cast long, slanting shadows through the colonnade. The warm golden hues of the setting sun blended harmoniously with the character's red hair, softening potential harshness with a deeply fitting atmosphere.
The two photos showcase attempts at different postures. The first stands tall with the weapon resting on the shoulder, projecting confidence and ease; the second leans sideways against the stone pillar, gazing into the distance with a touch of effortless relaxation. During this shoot, I also reflected on how Roleplay and cosplay aren't just about putting on a costume, but using the environment, lighting, and body language to bring 2D characters into 3D reality. Seeing the light catch the folds of the skirt and the wind ruffle the tips of the hair made these candid snapshots genuinely natural and moving.
Post-processing mainly focused on lighting gradients and subtle color grading, keeping highlight-shadow contrasts as soft as possible. Moving and crouching in full gear was quite physically demanding, and cleaning the prop and skirt train took longer than expected; but seeing the rich texture formed by blending the character into the environment made all the effort worthwhile. I hope this photo set faithfully captures the character while delivering a comfortable, pleasing visual experience to fellow fans of the franchise.
