For this Mid-Autumn project, we chose Shu and Jie from Arknights. To honor the theme of 'when moonlight shines bright,' we poured immense effort into our props and costumes. Shu's blue dragon horns, wig highlights, and plush tail, alongside Jie's braided black hair, hair accessories, and the intricate garment details on both of us, were repeatedly verified and adjusted before the shoot. Serving as both a model and the photographer for this session, I had to balance composition, lighting ambiance, and our performance in front of the lens simultaneously.
The set was styled as a traditional ancient interior framed by a colossal full moon in the background. To cultivate that hazy, luminous glow of moonbeams, we spent considerable time experimenting with the lighting. We used cool-toned lights to simulate moonlight catching the rim contours of our figures, balanced by warm amber lantern light as the primary key to illuminate facial details and garment textures. This warm-and-cool contrast immediately brought dimensional depth to the frames. The back-to-back composition in Photo 3 is one of my personal favorites: having just smoothed out our costume accessories, the quiet serenity of sitting side-by-side felt so natural that I pressed the shutter instantly. Shu's off-the-shoulder cut and effortless posture, framed against the backdrop of the full moon, captured the festive Mid-Autumn spirit while highlighting the character's signature charm.
Tight chemistry with my partner was key to the shoot's success. For the staggered-height composition in Photo 4—with Jie seated on the wooden chair and Shu resting near her knees—we made continuous adjustments to our posture and light positions to achieve flawless chiaroscuro across both faces. In the close-up calligraphy interaction in Photo 5, we took dozens of outtakes just to catch that fleeting moment of natural eye contact. Flowing robes and tails can easily appear cluttered on set, requiring constant tidying. Though muscle soreness set in after wrapping, seeing the captured frames made every bit of effort worth it.
Throughout the set, we strove to reflect each character's essence: Shu's gentle warmth and Jie's composed poise, conveyed through nuanced gestures and expressions. The plush rug, lotus blossoms in the background, and tea sets also helped ground this fantasy space with lived-in warmth. The entire shoot was a test of photographic technique and patience, and the final photos thankfully matched our vision. At the moment when moonlight shines bright, recording the Mid-Autumn Festival like this felt like the perfect tribute to the characters we love.
