Though shared past midnight, the theme of this shoot aligns deeply with the sentiment of Ai Haibara's character day. What is reflected in the mirror is never one's truest self—a canon motif that we brought to life during this shoot.
To align with the theme, I selected a blue-and-white dress inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, paired with black-and-white Striped stockings. The floor was carpeted with blue and yellow blossoms alongside sunflowers, featuring a gray bunny plush as the visual anchor; the set was decorated so densely that I had to position my skirt hem with meticulous care.
We encountered several technical challenges during shooting. For example, that large vintage wood-framed mirror was not only the visual focal point of the composition, but also a crucial tool for reflecting light. To craft a dreamy ambiance of light and shadow, photographer LuOfUn tested multiple lenses. The fisheye lens in particular stretched the frame's edges remarkably, making the floral sea appear far more lush, though it could easily distort the subject. Hence, we had to repeatedly calibrate angles so my facial features and leg lines maintained natural contours.
Chemistry with our assistant, WaTer-VON, was seamless, helping to smooth out the skirt flare and adjust prop placement. Poses like crouching amidst the flower patch touching the mirror, or lying on the floor beneath the swing gazing upward, required immense patience to maintain the garment's poise. The black-and-white Striped stockings looked stunning under the lens, especially when playing off the mirror's reflections.
While I typically look straight into the camera in regular shoots, to channel the character's detached yet solitary presence, I tried numerous poses gazing away from the lens—quietly cradling the rabbit doll among blooms, or reaching out to touch the glass. In the photo lying back in the floral sea, the fisheye perspective made the flowers along the perimeter rush toward the center like an enclosing floral circle.
This blue-toned dreamy ambiance, juxtaposed against bright yellow sunflowers, created an emotional resonance through warm and cool color contrast. Wrapping up the shoot felt like truly wandering through a fairy-tale labyrinth, capturing the rich, multifaceted essence of Shiho Miyano cosplay in this Character Day commemoration.
