For this studio session, the overall color palette was anchored against a solid purple backdrop, primarily to forge a sharp visual contrast with the abundant pink-and-blue gradients and black-on-white grid patterns of the attire. Photographer @SharkChili utilized an evenly diffused broad light source, which flawlessly brought out the subtle pearlescent sheen of the coat's specialty fabric.
I was thoroughly thrilled with the garment's intricate details. The outer haori not only recreated the black webbed lines, but its hem and cuffs transitioned smoothly from pure white to peach pink and down into soft light blue; the textile shimmered with fine glimmers as it turned beneath the lights, looking anything but cheap. The inner layer consisted of a black stand-collar uniform, where golden buttons and white chest piping introduced structured depth to the silhouette. The bottoms featured looser-cut hakama-style trousers paired with calf wraps sharing the matching gradient motif, visually elongating the leg lines like sleek Stockings. On the feet were black split-toe tabi socks and sandals, which felt remarkably stable to walk in.
Throughout the shoot, the use of props added immense life to the frames. The scabbard is pure white, with bright orange accents on the hilt and tsuba that broke up the chilly demeanor of the overall palette. Additionally, I prepared a translucent holographic butterfly prop; holding it between my fingertips or resting it near my eyes echoed the butterfly hair ornament nestled in the wig, perfectly accentuating the character's ethereal grace. However, striking poses with the blade truly tested core strength—especially the pose balancing on one foot while holding the blade horizontally behind the head. To capture the billowing hem mid-motion, we fired off over a dozen continuous shots just to select one satisfying frame, with the floor shadow casting an elegant arc.
In makeup, I wore purple contact lenses with deepened contour blending around the eyes, choosing rich red hues for the blush and lips to project that characteristic warmth laced with a dangerous edge before the lens. The wig bangs were cut blunt across the forehead, with highlighted blue strands flanking the face that draped naturally with movement. To convey the character's essence, I devoted serious attention to expression management: whether veiling half the face, glancing over the shoulder, or staring directly into the camera, maintaining unyielding focus without emotional fluctuation was essential to project an aura of serene composure.
The entire shoot spanned quite some time. To adjust the placement of the haori's hem and wide sleeves while seated, we experimented with multiple positions. Traditional garments can easily bunch up and appear bulky if not smoothed properly when seated, so we ultimately settled on a slight profile stance with legs extended forward, revealing the detailed calf wraps while allowing the haori to spread flat. Through this shoot, I gained valuable insight into harmonizing solid studio backdrops with character palettes. There are still many details to refine, and I look forward to unlocking even more dynamic poses next time.
