To capture Changfeng's gentle yet playful demeanor, we intentionally selected a studio backdrop featuring green bamboo elements to echo the subtle modern neo-Chinese design language of her outfit. This black-and-white off-the-shoulder maid dress is packed with details. The voluminous lantern sleeves and layered ruffled edges required careful lighting control to prevent the whites from blowing out and losing tactile detail, so our lighting technician placed softboxes at side-backlight angles to sculpt dimensional folds across the fabric. The golden embroidery along the cuffs and skirt hem gleams faintly under the studio strobes, while the red Chinese knot tassel at the waist serves as the crowning touch amidst the darker tones, injecting dynamic energy whenever I moved.
The feather duster prop was custom-made, with the grey fluffy tip and white lace-trimmed drapery being absolutely essential. Throughout the shoot, I explored a variety of poses to emphasize Changfeng's endearing charm—such as making a finger-heart gesture, leaning back on the sofa with crossed legs, or sitting upright holding the prop. The off-the-shoulder cut cleanly showcases the collarbones, while the oversized sleeves accentuate slender arms. To harmonize with the overall palette, I opted for pure white Stockings (tights) and glossy black leather shoes. In studio settings, white tights heavily challenge the lighting: harsh lights cause unflattering glare, while overly diffused light flattens the texture. When capturing foot close-ups, we calibrated the floor lights so the woven texture of the stockings appeared natural and smooth. Slipping off the shoes as shown in the photos, letting my stockinged toes brush the wooden sofa edge or stretching my legs forward, visually elongated the leg line and added allure while keeping the sitting posture lively and relaxed.
For makeup, staying faithful to the anime aesthetic meant keeping the foundation pristine and porcelain, with reddish-pink tones in the eye makeup to enhance a gentle, innocent look, paired with blunt bangs and long, straight black hair. Styling the wig's silky sheen and trimming the hairline took considerable prep, finished with hairspray along the sideburns so they remained immaculate from every angle. It was a shame I could only visit the Shanghai Cool Summer Festival for just one day, leaving behind many missed scenes and interactions—so all of that lingering longing was poured into this studio session, trying to capture as many varied poses as possible: lowering my legs, stretching them straight, or making heart signs. Over half a month of post-processing was mostly dedicated to skin texture retouching and softening overall tonality for a radiant, translucent complexion. For me, cosplaying is about obsessing over every detail until I'm truly satisfied—from garment accessories and stocking pairings to the body language in every frame. Changfeng is such a comforting, healing character; bringing her to life in the studio was exhausting but immensely rewarding. I hope to carve out more time next time to shoot more beloved characters at conventions and document outfits and styling across different genres.
