Shooting this white uniform look for Atago from Azur Lane is something I had mentally rehearsed many times ever since deciding on this theme. The most attractive part of this outfit is that it possesses the crisp sharpness of a military uniform while retaining a very special elegant charm, so I did quite a bit of preparation for all the details before the photos were taken.
First is this white double-breasted stand-collar military uniform. The golden stitching at the collar and the bright gold piping at the cuffs are the visual focal points of the entire outfit. To ensure the golden edges showed their proper luster and texture under the studio lights, we repeatedly checked its smoothness before shooting. The double-breasted metal buttons are also quite substantial, and when paired with the slightly structured shoulder cut, they beautifully outline the shoulder and neck lines. Pure white cotton fabric is actually a major test of craftsmanship because even a tiny wrinkle can mess up the light reflection. Therefore, during the shoot, I had to constantly mind whether my hand gestures and torso postures would cause unnecessary creases, ensuring that the clothing appeared neat and perfectly fitted in every single photo.
The head styling is the soul of the entire ensemble. For the long black wig, I specifically chose a material with finer strands and a subtle shimmer, keeping an appropriate thickness for the bangs on the forehead while letting the side hair fall naturally. To perfectly portray this Kemonomimi girl, the pair of black plush animal ears on top needed to be completely upright and full, so I set up a proper fixing slot inside the wig to prevent them from drooping under their own weight. At the same time, a small white headphone-like hair accessory tucked into the hair on the left side is also very clever; it breaks up the dullness of the black hair, making the overall color scheme of the head more rich and layered.
The styling of the lower half of the frame is a completely different story. The white miniskirt features a side slit design, which can showcase the dynamic movement of the legs during turns or sword-slashing motions. The semi-sheer black stockings combined with the wide-band black garter stockings create a highly classic color contrast with the pure white top and skirt. To make the visual proportions of the legs appear more slender and elongated, I selected a pair of white stiletto high heels with a moderate heel height, which both echoes the main white color of the upper body and helps maintain a stable stance. When executing the pose of turning around from behind, the tension from the garters and stockings perfectly outlines a sharp contour for the entire leg.
The black katana prop in my hand is also worth mentioning. Its scabbard has a lacquer-like gloss, and the details on the hilt and handguard are reproduced very accurately. When holding the hilt, you can feel a realistic physical center of gravity. When carrying it on my shoulder or holding it in a reverse grip, the change in weight distribution on my shoulder directly affects my entire posture. I had to naturally utilize the weight to adjust the tilt of my center of gravity to display Atago's easygoing and composed aura during the shoot.
During the studio shoot, I tried two completely different states. One was a frontal, arms-crossed pose, which gave off a more composed and confident aura; the other was the back-turning look over the shoulder shown in the photos, combined with the sword-carrying action, which evokes a relaxed and slightly playful vibe akin to daily interactions with the Commander. The photographer also adopted a uniform and soft frontal lighting, paired with a seamless pure white backdrop, making the character look as if she were extracted directly from the game interface, presenting a clean and pure visual experience.
Although the entire outfit combination looks simple, wearing it actually posed certain challenges. For instance, balancing the animal ears, maintaining the crispness of the clothes, and enduring standing in high heels all tested our detail control for the final output. However, when looking through the viewfinder and seeing the white outfit, black stockings, black hair, and those golden decorations coming together so harmoniously, all the preparation work felt exceptionally rewarding. Atago's unique charm in Azur Lane was beautifully brought to life on a 2D plane through these realistic styling elements.
