[New Jersey cosplay] Azur Lane's Snow-White Ceremony: Capturing Sacred Light and Shadows in Convention Photos

Shooting these convention photos for Azur Lane New Jersey Snow-White Ceremony had many behind-the-scenes details worth sharing. What attracted me most about this outfit was the layering brought by the main white palette and light tulle material, but shooting in a complex indoor convention environment was also quite a challenge.

Upon receiving the Snow-White Ceremony costume, my first impression was its substantial weight. The bow structure on the headpiece was crisp and firm, and with gold accessories added, the overall visual center of gravity shifted toward the upper body. Therefore, neck posture and shoulder relaxation were especially crucial during shooting. As for the wig, the light blue long hair paired with bangs needed to both frame the face and maintain a sense of lightness, which required a lot of prep work in styling and parting beforehand.

The biggest difficulty at convention scenes is usually background management. This time, we specifically selected a corner at the edge of the venue with distinct steel beam structures and dimmer lighting, utilizing the high ceiling of the venue to create a sense of spatial vastness. Through perspective from a wide-angle lens, we combined the dense steel grid above with floor reflections, allowing the white dress to pop out against the dark-toned hall, forming a strong contrast of light and dark.

In terms of makeup design, to match the sacred theme of this look, the base makeup went for a softer matte finish so that severe shine wouldn't appear under intense camera flashes. The eye makeup used earth tones as a base, softening the presence of eyeliner in favor of a light-colored yet sharply outlined style. Paired with white contacts and translucent lip makeup, it aimed to recreate the character's gentle yet cool aura.

Speaking of specific poses, a kneeling pose was chosen for this shoot. This posture really tests how you arrange the front hem of the dress, as it easily looks messy and clumped if unattended. When spreading it out, making good use of the fluffy petticoat underneath allows the front tulle to fan out naturally to both sides, forming a floral bloom silhouette. Meanwhile, extending both hands forward slightly while holding a white bouquet, combined with the long trailing veil resting on the ground, creates a soft, misty reflection on the polished floor, giving a fantastic overall sense of unity to the frame.

For on-site lighting, the evenly distributed rows of overhead lights at the top of the hall served as excellent rim lights. We used a slightly low-angle perspective during shooting paired with exposure compensation, creating beautiful highlights along the edges of the bow headpiece. Side fill light with a reflector was used for face illumination to ensure facial dimension without disrupting the overall cool white color tone.

Although many passersby walked past the scene, the photographer effectively blurred and darkened the background into a clean dark space using a large aperture and shallow depth of field, preserving only lighting highlights and steel beam lines—a shooting approach I personally love. Anyone who frequently shoots convention photos knows that finding a quiet space to enter character in a noisy environment isn't easy; once you get the angle and atmosphere right, the final shots convey that unique character presence.

From organizing costumes and props to coordinating makeup and hair, and capturing candid moments on-site, every satisfying convention photo requires extensive preparation. Being able to experience this character through the Snow-White Ceremony image was a very special attempt for me. Freezing this sacred moment woven in blue and white within the convention space makes me thoroughly satisfied.
