This photoset taken at CQU Huxi featured plum blossoms in the background, but the night lighting atmosphere made it look completely like a night sakura effect, giving a pure touch of Night sakura photography.
The timing wasn't ideal. I discovered upon arrival that the blossom season was nearing its end, with over half of the blossoms already fallen from the branches. However, the sparse branches left room for the rim lighting to pierce through. Together with the photographer, we used a classic 4m8 light stand to shoot from a high angle, maxing out the light effect, directly darkening the originally pitch-black background to make both the person and the blossoms pop, creating a highly on-point overall atmosphere.
This time I cosplayed Hu Tao from NARAKA: BLADEPOINT. The long blonde wig paired with beast ears, along with this pink and white lightweight gauze outfit, showed great transparency under the strong light. The thin outer gauze material of the garment, combined with the floral decoration at the waist and the off-the-shoulder detached sleeve design, felt highly lightweight to wear. The beast ear hair clips didn't over-reflect or wash out under the intense light, proving that our lighting angle didn't fail this time.
The movements during the shoot were mainly designed around nimbleness and playfulness. I experimented with standing on one foot holding an umbrella, as well as raising a hand to push aside the branches. Actually, standing on one foot on the grass is quite a test of balance, and since it was a bit windy at night, when the wide sleeves and streamers were blown up, it brought out a bit of natural motion blur combined with a slow shutter. This is also the beauty of night shoots—you don't need to deliberately force very exaggerated poses, and capturing actions naturally makes them more vivid.
The reason I insisted on using the light stand from a high angle was to simulate a moonlight or twilight texture with the lighting. However, shooting plum blossoms at night is quite a test of finding angles, because the pink petals and rough branches can easily look cluttered under intense flash illumination. We deliberately avoided large areas of bare branches, specifically finding local spots where branches were sparse and petals clustered to compose the frame, concentrating the primary visual focus on the character herself.
The two layers of lightweight gauze on the outside of the costume also easily caught fallen dried petals, which had to be dusted off after every movement adjustment, otherwise sections of the frame would look dirty and cluttered. However, standing under the blooming blossom trees in this outfit, combined with the quietness of the night, gave a great sense of immersion.
The final light and shadow effects basically restored the desired feeling, with soft light hitting the face and the edges of the hair strands looking luminous, forming a great warm and cool contrast between the pink of the entire environment and the black of the shadows. The overall direction went with a rather hazy, soft-light style, with the post-processing slightly adjusting the translucency of the frame. Although we didn't catch the peak blossom season, I am still highly satisfied with the Portrait photography texture captured using this classic high-light position setup for this Cosplay photoshoot.
