[Hiroi Kikuri Cosplay] Tipsy Everyday Life in an Izakaya, Slightly Drunken Moments from Bocchi the Rock!

Taking photos while drinking beverages indeed helps unearth a side of the character that feels closer to everyday life. For this shoot of the character Hiroi Kikuri, I intentionally bypassed overly gorgeous and rigid studio photography, opting instead for a real Japanese-style izakaya brimming with a rich Japanese ambience. In the past, I felt this slightly drunken, tipsy state was hard to master, but once on set—seeing the wooden lattice windows, Japanese-style paper sliding doors, and holding an actual chilled drink radiating coolness—I felt instantly immersed in that lazy, relaxed atmosphere unique to her.

I put quite a bit of thought into reproducing the look. For hair color, I picked a vibrant, rich bright pink, braided into a low-hanging single plait paired with classic straight bangs. Combined with the hairstylist's intentional volumized and slightly frizzy texture, the look gave the character a touch of easygoing, unkempt cuteness. For clothing, a light green low-cut sleeveless long dress was chosen; its wide neckline nicely flatters the shoulder and neck contours, layered under that track jacket with black-and-white striped cuffs for distinct contrast. This outfit is not only comfortable but also deeply aligns with the character's contrasting traits—slightly decadent yet brisk and cool. On my wrist, I deliberately wore a red beaded bracelet, adding a vibrant accent popping between the cool-toned aluminum can and the green dress hem.

During shooting, we captured many vivid moments: raising a white aluminum can to hail friends, or sitting by the bar counter holding a glass bottle in a tipsy state. To convey that emotion of being immersed in one's own world and enjoying the present, many actions were improvised while I leaned against the bar counter or sat cross-legged on the floor. One close-up photo where I gently touched my lips while looking toward the camera was captured by the photographer while I was daydreaming and lost in thought; this unforced naturalness often resonates most easily with viewers. Meanwhile, actions like raising the bottle with head tilted back or stretching arms high up looked effortless, but to find the perfect lighting angle, we actually shot repeatedly to achieve the desired effect.

The photography techniques this time were also exceptionally suited to the izakaya environment. The photographer used plenty of shallow depth of field to blur the background sake bottles, magazines, and wooden shelves, keeping the visual focus firmly locked on me. The warm yellow indoor lighting served as the main ambient light source, not only softening facial contours but also unifying the image tone into a warm color palette. Particularly with low-angle shots, while elongating body proportions, the light outlined the character's contours from the rear-side; the three-dimensionality brought by this ambient light was far more natural than rigid studio lighting. During post-processing, we didn't perform much complex color grading, as the raw photos' texture and light-dark contrast were already rich and intense.

Looking back at the entire finished set, although making many glass-raising, head-tilting, and hand-reaching interaction poses to coordinate with props and setting made my body somewhat exhausted, seeing the final images on screen gave me an incomparable sense of satisfaction from the seamless fusion of character, venue, light, and shadow. These images record not just the appearance of an anime character, but my authentic interpretation of her unique charm. Taking advantage of being in peak form to complete this special work with my partner, maintaining this immersive experience to restore characters is precisely the joy I constantly pursue in cosplay photography.
