For this Touhou Project Kagiyama Hina cosplay shoot, we made comprehensive preparations across both pre-production planning and on-set execution. First, regarding the costume and hair/makeup styling: this red-based dress features abundant white lace and ruffles, with black-and-red floral prints on the shoulders and hem, while the iconic white spiral pattern on the main dress required careful grooming. Since this was an outdoor shoot, I was very worried about soiling the delicate red fabric and black tulle underlayer, so we took numerous protective precautions before and after entering the water. The long blue hair with straight bangs was also specifically trimmed, and the eye makeup was adjusted multiple times to create a deep, subtly melancholic gaze true to the character's essence.
The shooting process was far more challenging than anticipated. We found a secluded stream and small waterfall in the forest—the surroundings were tranquil yet extremely humid. To maintain steady footing on the submerged rocks, I wore these thick-soled brown boots, which offered great slip resistance. Stepping into the water, the skirt hem inevitably got wet, requiring us to shoot efficiently, so the photographer and I worked in tight coordination. In one shot where I stood on a rock lifting the skirt hem, because the heavy fabric required firm lifting while balancing my body, my calf and knee muscles were fully engaged, and that frozen capture turned out unexpectedly brilliant.
Photographer R-Bing's technique was very professional, paying great attention to lighting and shadows. The light filtering through the canopy shot with a wide aperture formed gorgeous bokeh orbs that accentuated the character's silhouette without blowing out the lace details on the dress. During the session, we explored diverse compositions, such as crouching before the waterfall or sitting on forest stone steps; when the wind blew the ribbons of my headdress, he captured wonderful organic motion. This was also thanks to extensive pre-shoot communication regarding intended facial expressions and turning angles. Under natural light, the Red dress look with its red silk fabric created a vivid visual contrast with the lush, deep green forest—this sense of contrast was precisely what we sought to deliver in this Outdoor stream photography session. Looking at the finished photos, all the hardship of braving muddy water and slippery rocks felt completely worthwhile.
