Shooting Jing Yuan from Honkai: Star Rail this time proved somewhat more complex than imagined. The first costume featured the white robe paired with black armor, with the garments and metal fittings carrying significant weight. To maintain an upright posture, I had to keep my core engaged constantly. In the first shot, I held a scroll against a backdrop of hung calligraphy scrolls and a teapot on the desk, with the photographer aiming to convey the atmosphere of a strategist orchestrating plans from his seat.
Later, we shot the seated version against the green totem backdrop, which was chosen as the cover photo. I deliberately wore red trousers and black tall boots to fully showcase the lines of the legs. To capture that contemplative, effortless composure, the photographer asked me to cross one leg and rest my chin in hand. The gaze could not be rigid, as even a slight misstep in head angle would collapse the entire imposing presence. After multiple adjustments, we finally captured that slightly melancholic yet serene state in the final frame.
The third photo captures the moment of drawing the blade with a backward glance. The greatsword was a solid prop and exceptionally heavy, severely testing arm strength to lift. To stabilize my center of gravity, I slightly angled my body, relying on wrist strength with back straightened, striving to project an intimidating gaze. We repeated that pose numerous times until my arm ached terribly.
The final shot was taken against a backdrop of dark chains under oppressive lighting, with a crimson pillar partially veiling my face. This frame called for a brooding, almost maniacal intensity. Leaning in this spot, I let strands of hair drape across one eye, complementing hand gestures to unveil the hidden, unspoken side of his inner world.
The color palette and scenes varied considerably across this set. In my view, portraying every facet of a tactical mastermind cannot rely solely on stiff postures; one must genuinely study the depth within his gaze. The prop master who crafted this armor added meticulous surface weathering, making it look grounded and authentic. As a client photoshoot I personally took part in, weaving these elements together marked an in-depth creative endeavor in character interpretation.
