Shooting this Maid outfit styling for Kafka took a lot of thought and care, from costume preparation to set design. For the wig, I selected a highly saturated wine-red tone, trimming neat blunt bangs in front while preserving the character's iconic wavy curls along both sides, topped with a white ruffled headdress. The costume is a modified Maid outfit in a black, white, and red tri-color palette: the neckline features a black choker adorned with a red gemstone, shoulders are accented with black puff sleeves edged in white ruffles, and the arms wear sleek black opera gloves. A wide black corset belt embellished with a golden fan-shaped buckle cinches the waist, flowing into a multi-tiered black-and-red flared skirt. To harmonize with the overall aesthetic, the lower half features black thigh-high socks (Stockings), which clearly accentuate leg lines when sitting cross-legged on the sofa.
The location was chosen in a studio with vintage European elements. The purple velvet sofa had wonderful texture, complete with diamond-tufted button detailing and gilded carved wood trims. The backdrop showcased dark wooden bookshelves filled with books, flanked on the left by crimson drapes and a dark fireplace. For props, I prepared a wooden violin, a red rose, and a small card inscribed with ornate calligraphy. For the violin shots, to prevent stiffness, I rehearsed violin-holding and bow-gripping postures in front of a mirror beforehand—fingering the strings with my left hand and drawing the bow with my right while keeping my gaze immersed on the body of the instrument, creating a deeply immersive presence on camera.
Posing on the sofa also underwent multiple iterations. In one frame, I crossed my legs while holding the red rose and the card—the text on the card being a subtle little Easter egg. In another, I reclined sideways along the sofa with one leg extended naturally, holding a half-removed black glove in hand to project a languid, sultry composure. For the seated shot on the carpet, the skirt had to be neatly arranged while holding a slender black prop, lifting my gaze slightly upward. Regarding lighting, the studio utilized warm-toned illumination, accentuating the lush textures of the velvet sofa and fabrics.
The makeup highlighted the eyes, blending reddish eyeshadow gradients paired with pale contact lenses to lend the gaze piercing depth. The foundation was kept clean and luminous, while the lips were finished in a matte dark crimson that echoed the wine-red wig. The floor was laid with a blue-patterned rug, where I experimented with seated poses between takes. The maid dress fabric possessed subtle luster that revealed dimensional depth under studio lights. The black Stockings also felt wonderful, flattering leg contours cleanly. The finalized images preserve the character's innate mystique while incorporating the distinctive charm and subtle allure of a maid coordinate. The photographer offered helpful composition advice, such as utilizing the sofa edge as a foreground element or guiding visual flow via body language. The atmosphere throughout was delightfully relaxed. Among the curated selects, my personal favorite is the shot sitting cross-legged on the purple sofa—the framing is rich, and the color contrast is striking. The styling reached a high level of finish, with garment details and props harmonizing seamlessly with the concept. That wraps up this share; I hope everyone enjoys this set of photos!
