[Moriya Suwako Cosplay] The Frog Goddess in Touhou Project: Summer Lotus Leaves and Woven Straw Hat Outfit

This dress set is a project designed for Moriya Suwako in Touhou Project, featuring an overall purple and white color-blocking design. The vest section uses a deep purple jacquard fabric with a rich texture, which forms a visually layered look alongside the cyan-green embroidery patterns on the skirt. The outer cover is a semi-translucent white gauze top designed with wide sleeves, featuring drawstring and tie details at the cuffs and hem that create a natural drape when pulled slightly, giving a light and flowing effect when walking. The white lace trim at the bottom also adds a touch of delicate maidenly flair to the dress.

Speaking of accessories, the wide-brimmed straw hat worn on my head is one of the main highlights of the entire look. Two hemispherical large white eyes with dark pupils are sewn onto the front of the straw hat, instantly capturing the character's signature playful yet slightly mysterious nature. White tulle hangs from both sides of the brim, echoing the top's fabric, tied with deep purplish-red thin cords and bead strings to max out the details. For hair, I went with long light-blonde hair with straight bangs, complemented by small braids on both sides decorated with bead strings at the ends, forming a cohesive style with the hat ornaments. Makeup leaned toward a soft, translucent pinkish-orange tone to highlight the light, energetic vibe fitting for a petite character.

The shoot was split into two parts: indoor studio and outdoor location. For photo one in the studio, rockery stones and budding white lotus flowers were arranged as a backdrop. A round woven straw mat served as a standing prop. When taking full-body shots, the paired white mid-calf socks and black thick-soled Mary Jane leather shoes stretched the leg lines nicely, making overall proportions look more coordinated. Under the soft fill light of the studio, the dark purple textures of the dress and the green-and-blue embroidery patterns on the skirt were clearly displayed.

Additionally, we took some photos at outdoor locations, holding a huge lotus leaf as a hand prop, which perfectly fits this character's setting in Touhou Project. Outdoor natural light, especially the dappled sunlight filtering through leaf gaps onto the body, gave this slightly heavy summer dress a wonderfully translucent feel. Holding the lotus leaf, its greenery paired delightfully with the cyan-green embroidery on the skirt. Outdoor shooting offered more spontaneity than the studio, allowing candid captures to reveal the character's lively side.

Adjusting this outfit presented a slight challenge. Because the skirt itself features internal ruching and the outer gauze is quite thin, improper pairing could easily make the lower body look puffy. So I adjusted the waist drawstring to make the top fit closer while letting the hem flare out naturally—preserving character traits without impeding movement for casual street wear or Anime cosplay conventions. Though wide sleeves and thin materials look breathable, preparing for heat prevention is still necessary if staying outdoors for long periods waiting for light in summer.

Overall, this was a deeply satisfying photoshoot. The purple-and-white color palette paired with woven straw elements and lotus leaf props creates a unique ambiance between a Chinese style outfit and modern daily wear under the interplay of light and shadow. The garment craftsmanship details are spot on, and the tailoring fits petite character silhouettes beautifully. Whether under overcast soft light or bright outdoor sunshine, this costume adapts remarkably well. I hope to capture more diverse sides of this character through photography across different seasons and settings.
