Preparing for this Formidable cosplay in a Bunny girl styling from Azur Lane required considerable thought and preparation beforehand. For the wig, I selected this white-silver hair style with blunt bangs; to align with the character setting, I specifically chose high-translucency red contact lenses, giving the gaze both sharp focus and an aura of nonchalant coolness. The plush bunny ears atop my head were shaped with natural curves, which, paired with the fluffy white pompoms on the side and the black-and-white lace hair accessories, instantly dialed the Anime cosplay ambiance to the max—blending the playful charm of a Bunny girl with Gothic refinement.
The layered depth of the costume is actually hard to fully convey solely through still photos: the upper body is primarily white, featuring soft, multi-layered chiffon ruffles at the cuffs with a fluffy volume. The shoulders and chest incorporate extensive black openwork lace; this black-and-white color clash and the layering of contrasting fabrics cast varied highlights and reflections under studio lighting. The biggest headache when wearing this outfit was keeping the white sections pristine—anti-stain precautions were applied to the cuffs and bodice, and fortunately, the final presentation looked remarkably airy and flowy.
In this styling, I intentionally incorporated a wide red satin ribbon prop. Compared to a monochrome black, white, and grey palette, this splash of crimson served as a wonderful visual accent in the composition. Holding both ends of the ribbon close to my chin and using its curves to guide the viewer's gaze not only enriched the image's color depth, but also infused a dynamic narrative sense. For the lower half, high-gloss sheer black tights paired with black pointed-toe high heels in this Black stockings cosplay look made the leg contours appear long and toned from low-angle upward perspectives. However, shooting in such stockings and heels was physically taxing, especially holding upward-angle poses on a chair, which heavily tested core strength.
The shooting set was centered around a black leather chair adorned with metallic rivets. The black leather of the seat reflected the ambient lighting, merging seamlessly into the dark-toned background so the subject seemed suspended in a deep, moody space. The photographer utilized a dramatic low-angle upward and slightly tilted composition, visually elongating body proportions through perspective. Lighting struck from an upper diagonal, casting a distinct terminator line. I deliberately tilted my face slightly into the light, rendering the makeup and crimson pupils crisply three-dimensional while allowing the rest of the body to recede naturally into shadow—a high-contrast lighting technique perfectly suited for highlighting this Gothic aesthetic in black, white, and red.
Throughout the entire process, my interpretation of Formidable from Azur Lane went beyond mere appearance replication—I wanted to capture her noble, composed, and uniquely languid aura. While Bunny girl elements often convey a bubbly and cute vibe, considering the character's original lore, I intentionally dialed back obvious cheerfulness in my performance, using a cooler gaze and subtly languid body language to convey her intrinsic personality. Especially in those shots using the red ribbon to guide the viewer's gaze, I experimented with multiple hand poses, ultimately selecting this version as it best captured the visual tension I envisioned.
For retouching, we avoided overly exaggerated filters, focusing primarily on refining light-and-shadow structures and skin texture details. White hair easily loses dimension in dim lighting, so we specifically brightened the outer edges of the hair strands while preserving the delicate sheer sheen of the Black stockings cosplay and the fine fabric textures. When doing cosplay, one frequently encounters complex lighting and environmental challenges, but the final presentation of this shoot closely matched my envisioned results. Reviewing every new character set to see where I can improve is one of the key reasons this Anime cosplay hobby continues to bring me such a fulfilling sense of accomplishment.
