[Remielle Cosplay] Night Elf with Gothic Wings

Bringing these huge black wings to Firefly ACG Expo for this shoot was quite a challenge. Before the shoot, my biggest worry was that an all-black look in a cluttered convention environment would lack dimension. Especially given the wings' huge volume, hard light could easily flatten them into a dead black blob, making lighting setup the key to this set's success.

On-site, we used a full Jinbei lighting system. The main light was an HD250max with an 80cm octagonal softbox, a combo providing soft, broad light coverage that rendered the pink wig's clear texture and skin tones gently while keeping facial lighting even. For rim lighting, an HD100 bare bulb was set up to flash directly; this key light gave the massive black wings behind me a beautiful contour outline, with highlights and shadows intersecting along every feather edge for a highly three-dimensional visual effect. The floor-level Hi500pro flashing directly up at the ground was the finishing touch—lighting my legs from below, giving the black thigh-high stockings a sleek sheen under low-angle light while smoothing calf-to-ankle curves, paired with black bow heels to elongate visual proportions beautifully.

Equipment-wise, we used a Sony A7M4 body with a Jinbei Q7III Sony-edition trigger; the camera's straight-out-of-camera colors already possessed great texture. In post-processing, while preserving a cool gray environment base tone, we slightly boosted the contrast between the pink hair color and black outfit. Actually, the hall's large cool blue glass windows provided ample ambient light. When combined with strobe artificial light, the clash of cold and warm light sources enriched the color depth.

Regarding the costume, this Dark Gothic style outfit features many rich details: lace cutouts and leather stitching across the chest, paired with a black choker and elbow-length gloves, each element tailored to fit the character's mysterious aura. The wings behind took the most effort, built from layered, press-cut foam sheets sprayed with non-reflective matte paint so that even under direct bare-flash exposure, they maintained a deep, rich texture without excessive glare.

For pose design, the photographer and I coordinated extensively. Especially in seated shots, making heavy wings drape naturally without flattening the skirt was technical work. Squatting on a white folding stool, I adjusted my center of gravity several times. The final result was very satisfying—especially with legs naturally crossed toward the lens combined with upward fill light, expressing the unique charm and elegance of Dark Gothic style.

Although moving with such massive equipment through dense crowds at the anime convention venue was physically exhausting—the gear was really heavy, and I almost felt like dismantling it midway—capturing these surprising lighting moments with the team in such an environment was thoroughly enjoyable. As an experiment in Anime-style photography and Convention photography, this set represents not just replicating character appearance, but an image experiment in dark aesthetic mood. From lighting and outfit to post-production color balance, everything was kept consistent and restrained, making it one of my most fulfilling convention creative experiences recently.
