May is the time when everyone is busy with military training. Using this time node, I shot a set of Kanao with a strong sense of training in a white background photography studio.

A pure white background studio is actually quite challenging for displaying clothing colors, especially this classic purple uniform; if the lighting is too harsh, it will look rigid. It relied entirely on the photographer @小溪's control over the lighting to make the garment's texture show great layering. In an environment like a white background photography studio, shooting a three-dimensional feel heavily relies on the cooperation of light positions and softboxes. The boots I chose this time are quite special—high-top white chunky-heeled boots, originally intended to add a bit of a stately posture, which creates a tightening visual effect when paired with the action of drawing the sword, preventing the lower body from looking thin.

During the shoot, I was constantly adjusting the angle of holding the hilt. Because this semi-squatting posture combined with high-raising the sword can easily cause the elbow to block the face or the hilt to tilt if one isn't careful, we tried repeatedly many times to find the balance point that keeps the blade and body lines on a vertical axis without looking stiff. This sideways stretching action with the hand actually carries a slight sense of gathering power, hoping to add a bit of breathing room to the frame through the extension of the arm.

Precisely because the white background photography setup is so clean, it conversely allows people to focus more on the character's demeanor. Although Kanao usually looks quiet and tight-lipped, her eyes carry stories. Therefore, in the close-up shot, I deliberately tilted my head slightly, relaxed the muscles around my eyes, and instead of intentionally staring at the camera, looked diagonally upward with a slightly blank expression, hoping the image could convey that quiet yet sharp temperament.

Out of the two looks, the dynamic pose tucks the knees together, which, combined with the tension in the hands, serves as a continuation of the character's combat state, while the close-up half-body shot places more emphasis on emotional expression. Wanting to integrate these seemingly soft movements into the character's original personality isn't just about dressing up like them; the standing stance, shifting of the center of gravity, and even the posture of splayed fingers all require time to ponder for this damselette cosplay.

A pure white studio heavily tests skin texture. The makeup shouldn't be too thick; the eye makeup selected a light purple blending to match the character's eye color from Demon Slayer, making it look clearer and more natural. In the post-processing after shooting, the original skin texture was intentionally preserved without being overly smoothed; retaining a bit of realism better fits the temperament I wanted to present.

This time, the entire effort went into accurately grasping the character's sense of serenity. Actually, before shooting, I was worried about whether I could handle this temperament, because although Kanao appears gentle on the outside, her inner self is highly clear and assertive. Therefore, I tried to restrain every bit of force in my movements, achieving stability, precision, and quietness, moving closer to her usual quiet yet swift way of acting.

The shooting process took about three hours. Holding poses for a long time actually made my legs a bit sore, especially since the soles of the white boots are quite thick, and switching back and forth between squatting and sitting positions was a major test for core strength. However, seeing these clean and sharp final photos in the white studio made me feel it was all worth it. After wrapping up, I reviewed a few frames with @小溪; this minimalist background is perfect for showcasing the pure sense of an anime character. I wonder if everyone will like this set of Kanao cosplay photos that lean towards a daily training vibe in anime-style photography.
