For this shoot of Remilia from Touhou Project, I specifically selected a gothic set featuring red, black, and gold tones to align with the character's setting. The room was decorated with Roman pillars, red roses, golden frames, and red draping fabric, giving the lighting across the venue a classic cinematic quality. Remilia's costume follows the classic Gothic Lolita style, featuring layered white lace petticoats beneath a red-and-black bodice and skirt, paired with a deep blue wig and a black headpiece adorned with red roses. To best capture the Black tights outfit and red lace-up shoes, the photographer used numerous low-angle shots during reclining poses to elongate the leg lines. Holding a red apple served to recreate one of her character's iconic motifs.
The shoot was divided into three main poses. The first was reclining on a sofa with golden filigree while holding the red apple, spreading the skirt as widely as possible; the photographer used ambient red light and overhead lighting to cast defined shadows that accentuated facial contours. The second involved leaning back across a chair with legs stretched out, naturally highlighting the lines of the legs and red shoes within a rich, full composition. The third set featured standing up with a black rapier in a more dynamic pose, with the skirt flaring in motion against background layers of red curtains and ornate frames, giving the character a more commanding presence.
Because the red ambient lighting was quite intense, post-processing intentionally preserved the reds in the highlights and deep tones in the shadows to heighten contrast, avoiding overly bright whites. Beyond the red highlights, the cool blue of the hair provided a striking contrast against the warm environment. We repeatedly adjusted lighting brightness during the shoot because red light sources can create unusual reflections on foundation makeup, requiring minor skin-tone adjustments in post; nevertheless, at certain angles, this red light perfectly enhanced the chilly glamour of a dark vampire. Since the costume has multiple layers, reclining shots required frequent adjustments to the skirt to prevent awkward folds or wardrobe malfunctions, which took considerable time. This look is truly demanding on base makeup, as red-filtered lighting can easily wash out skin tones, requiring slightly heavier makeup, especially around the eyes.
Collaborating with the professional photographer and crew went very smoothly. Props including the apple, rapier, and red roses were thoroughly prepared, making the overall atmosphere of the final Anime-style photography feel richer and more cohesive than expected. It was a thoroughly satisfying roleplay experience. Recreating the character's original setting was a lot of fun, and I'm glad to share it with everyone.
