[Seiga Kaku Cosplay] Lady Seiga in Touhou Project: Casual Photoshoot in the Traditional Style Woods

Regarding this Seiga Kaku cosplay photoshoot, I actually had specific ideas in mind for this look. The blue wig styled in a double-loop bun paired with this lightweight traditional style cosplay gauze skirt, set against ancient buildings with red walls and green trees, happens to showcase the character's serene and aloof composure. When people mention Lady Seiga in Touhou Project, many immediately think of quirky memes or stereotypical fairy-like tropes. But I believe that to shoot a character well, one must first find harmony between the setting and the look. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with how this set turned out; the atmosphere mainly came from that day's splendid natural light and quaint environment.

Let's talk about the styling prep first. I made many adjustments to the wig part. The classic blue double-loop bun looks simple, but styling it to be secure yet natural really tests your craftsmanship. The loops on both sides needed to be round with a natural airy feel, rather than stiff, rigid attachments. For hair accessories, gold side clips were used as accents, creating a crisp warm-and-cool contrast against the blue wig, making the head styling look clean and sharp.

The outfit was the highlight of this cosplay. I chose an off-the-shoulder dress adorned with abundant ruffles and lettuce-edge trims, featuring a primary color palette combining soft mint green and white gauze. This elegant green against the original red-wall backdrop created a visually harmonious color relationship. The top's cuffs and hem were paneled with soft white tulle, complemented by a dark patterned waist sash that defined the waistline nicely. The lower section featured a voluminous long skirt with flowing ribbons over layered light gauze, detailed with delicate pale pink floral embroidery. The most special feature was the floor-length translucent ribbon—holding it in one hand during the shoot made dynamic poses effortless while leveraging the translucent fabric to evoke a hazy, celestial aura.

The chosen venue for that day was an outdoor courtyard full of traditional Chinese charm. The vermilion building and wooden pillars behind me were vibrant, topped with dark gray tiled roofs; large blocks of color like these make for great photoshoot backdrops. Lush trees filled the courtyard, with sunlight filtering through leaves to cast beautiful light and shadow. Photo one was shot under even front-lighting, capturing the costume colors and details clearly, presenting a soft and tranquil look. For photo two, I specifically asked the photographer to use strong backlighting, letting sunlight pierce through branches directly onto me and the long skirt with flowing ribbons. Lens flares and light leaks coated the frame in a hazy, dreamlike soft focus, instantly bringing out the ambiance.

Regarding gestures and expressions, I tried to capture the character's calm, serene side without forcing overly theatrical "immortal pointing" poses. In that setting, simply standing there as the wind blew up the skirt and ribbons created a beautiful composition naturally. I personally love the pose in Photo 1 where my head tilts slightly with my palm resting gently raised—as if lightly touching my hair or inadvertently making a spellcasting or guiding gesture, with my gaze directed straight at the camera to maintain composure and cool detachment.

Although shooting this cosplay was exhausting—especially walking in circles around the courtyard in multiple layers of light gauze while constantly checking if my wig or accessories shifted—seeing the final photos made every effort worthwhile. In color grading, I mainly desaturated the red in the background to highlight the refreshing tone of the outfit, ensuring the ancient architecture didn't overpower the subject but framed her like a picture frame instead. This is my small personal insight when doing cosplay: whether a final photo looks great depends not just on makeup or outfit grandeur, but on scene interaction, light and shadow usage, and steady emotional expression—none of which can be omitted.

The character Seiga Kaku in Touhou Project inherently possesses an aura of mystery and otherworldly transcendence, and my attempt this time aimed to recreate this keynote as faithfully as possible. Without relying on overly exaggerated props, I depended solely on the outfit's drape, sheer gauze texture, and natural body language to portray her traits. Sometimes, simpler props and gestures highlight picture texture even better, and I hope this photo set offers everyone a visual experience distinct from other fanworks.
