[Tewi Inaba Cosplay] Touhou Project Lucky Rabbit's Lazy Afternoon Japanese Room Shoot

This shoot features Tewi Inaba from Touhou Project—everyone's favorite lucky rabbit! The venue selected was a highly traditional Japanese home with wooden architecture. Sliding open the wooden lattice doors revealed a room filled with tatami mats and rich wood grain textures. We chose late afternoon for the shoot, when the sunlight takes on a deep, vibrant golden hue. Filtering through wooden windows and tree leaves, light spilled in mottled patches across the floor; this natural light became our single most important filter.

First, let's talk about the costume and styling choices. To fit this rabbit monster's quirky character and aesthetic, I chose a light pink dress featuring a high empire waist, flared ruffles, and lace paneling. The neckline incorporates a red hanging cord tied with a cute little woven carrot ornament. Atop my head sat a pair of fluffy white bunny ears made with thick plush fabric that feels super soft to the touch. To heighten character recognition, bright red contacts were paired with a black bob wig whose hair strands glinted beautifully under direct light.

The core focus of this session was grounded in the lived-in realism provided by props and being barefoot. Since her character lore is closely tied to carrots, I brought along fresh carrots alongside a woven basket. During the photoshoot, I interacted with the carrots in various ways—sometimes holding one right by my mouth to bite into it, mimicking a rabbit's cautious yet slightly sly gaze; other times tossing a carrot casually on a wooden tray, letting myself meld into that lazy, unhurried afternoon atmosphere. Yet the element that delivered the purest sense of immersion was going barefoot. On a summer afternoon, stepping barefoot onto warm wooden floorboards heated by sunlight creates a genuine tactile friction, instantly stripping away all guardedness to evoke a cozy, homey illusion that brings this Cosplay photography set alive.

Regarding camera setups, @雾雨若叶 tried several intriguing angles this time. Beyond standard eye-level perspectives, a few shots used slight low angles paired with tilted compositions, capturing whimsical, playful moments alongside me sticking my tongue out. Additionally, close-up portraits exposed to direct sunlight caught crisp makeup details, right down to individual highlights gleaming on hair strands. Such dynamic angle shifts lent strong narrative storytelling and vitality to the overall photo set.

There was one slight challenge during this shoot: peak midsummer heat. While traditional Japanese homes offer decent ventilation, wearing heavy bunny ears and a full wig in the heat—combined with repeated takes to lock down poses—made things quite sultry. However, driven by a deep love for Touhou Project and Tewi Inaba, I was able to reset my mindset swiftly before every retake. Huge thanks also go to the photographer for meticulously capturing light and angles. Late afternoon light shifts rapidly; missing a window by mere minutes completely shifts the sunspots. We had to execute lens positioning, pose coordination, and facial expressions within tight timeframes. Strong afternoon sunlight produces stark light-and-shadow contrast, demanding fine control over lighting ratios—preserving shadow details while avoiding blown-out highlights required precise balance of shutter speed and aperture.

Finally, for post-processing, I personally favored retaining more natural skin texture without excessive smoothing, allowing ambient light to cast naturally across the skin. Combined with the warmth of the raw shots and natural wood tones, the overall set delivers a cozy, comforting visual impression. This soft, relaxed state perfectly aligns with the nonchalant, carefree spirit of the lucky rabbit!
