Taking advantage of a sunny day, I shot this Remilia Scarlet cosplay. To be honest, for a vampire mistress, shooting outdoors under bright sunlight feels counterintuitive, but against the outdoor anime convention backdrop from Touhou Project, it created a wonderfully unique contrast.
Let's talk about the hair and makeup details. For hair, I used a layered, curly light-blue wig with slightly curled bangs to create a naturally fluffy volume without feeling heavy. For the eyes, the focus was recreating her scarlet eyes and red under-eye shadow; paired with red colored contacts and elongated eyeliner, it expressed the character's slightly tsundere demeanor. For the lips, I chose a distinctive dark red, steering the overall makeup toward an exquisite sweet-and-edgy aesthetic.
In terms of costume, I wore a custom Gothic style outfit. The upper body features semi-sheer white gauze sleeves with cutout lace cuffs that flow lightly in the air. 3D red roses are sewn onto the red corset across the chest and waist, creating rich depth alongside pearl necklaces and a white lace choker. Tassels and metal buckles on the corset belt also elevated the texture of the garment. The skirt features an asymmetrical patchwork of red and white, combining a textured deep-red outer layer with a white lace underskirt.
For the legs, I styled the look with cosplay white tights paired with red patent leather lace-up block heels. The red-and-white clash is a classic design for this character and extends the visual lines of the legs. While the black bat wings on my back were props, the lightweight material made them effortless to support, adapting naturally to various poses during the shoot.
The red apple held in hand served as an iconic storytelling element; whether raised high or cradled in both hands, it added narrative intrigue and playfulness to the frame. The photographer also put thought into the composition—for instance, in the seated pose in Photo 6, naturally extending both legs forward while lightly touching the bonnet brim showcased the details of the cosplay white tights and shoes completely from an eye-catching angle.
The shoot took place on outdoor concrete pavement where convention lighting was quite harsh. Instead of deliberately dodging strong sunlight, we lowered the brightness during post-processing to accentuate the saturation of the red and the purity of the white, preserving the textured realism of sunlight. Throughout the shoot, we constantly tackled harsh shadow issues while maneuvering with large wings and handling the gaze of passersby. Despite the effort, translating the in-game character details into reality through cosplay felt deeply rewarding. From the lace mob cap and pearl chains to the gloves and corset belt, every part needed to maintain its drape and layering through wide movements, and I am very satisfied with how the final photos turned out.
