[Houraisan Kaguya Cosplay] The Sinner of Eternity and the Instant in Touhou Project

For this Houraisan Kaguya cosplay, we determined early in the preparation stage that a dark bamboo forest would serve as the ideal backdrop to highlight the character's serene, aloof nature. The pink cross-collar top paired with a deep red skirt creates visual contrast while fitting the classical, ethereal tone of Touhou Project. The cloud-pattern embroidery on the top and the golden bamboo and plum blossom motifs along the hem of the skirt are key highlights of this look. Finding fabric that accurately rendered the embroidery took considerable time, but the finished costume holds a rich texture under the light.

The centerpiece of this styling lies in the hair ornaments and props. The custom hairpiece strung with vibrant beads was made by hand; its black wire armature mimics twisted branches with an abstract decorative sensibility, subtly echoing Princess Kaguya's concept of \"Eternity and the Instant\" from Touhou Imperishable Night. Two essential props were used during the shoot: a white-based paper umbrella and a glowing lunar orb. Taking inspiration from Hakoniwazeko's illustrations of Kaguya, the seated posture holding the orb in photo 3 evokes a deep sense of stillness. To recreate this mood, we sought out a relatively dark forest setting, relying on real-time fill lighting to make the sphere in hand the visual focal point.

As for makeup, emphasis was placed on porcelain white skin and her signature red lips, which, paired with hime-cut straight black hair, preserved the elegance and subtle nonchalance of a traditional Japanese maiden. The long black hair falling across the red attire created strong color contrast. Attention was also paid to the layered detail around the neckline, where a white lace bow tie and red cord tassels added refinement to the overall look.

The environment on the day of the shoot was even dimmer than anticipated, surrounded by tall trees, moss-covered rocks, and damp, slippery stone steps. While this authentic wild setting presented lighting challenges during our bamboo forest photography session, it conferred a mysterious atmosphere upon the frames. The scene seated on the wooden bench in photo 3 was shot tightly, requiring careful angles to blend the chair with the natural vegetation while ensuring the orb's light softly illuminated my face.

Throughout the shoot, the folds of the skirt and the positioning of the props—especially the umbrella and the glowing orb—required constant adjustment, as slight misalignments would cause harsh reflections or unwanted shadows. Fortunately, the final results captured both the color palette and mood that define the character. The drape of the red skirt combined with traditional embroidery gave the outfit a balance of classical elegance and subtle fantasy tension.

Overall, this photoshoot served not only as a tribute to this classic character from Touhou Project, but also as a test of our control over photography, makeup, and styling. Amid the dark light and shadows of the bamboo forest, the quiet, isolated demeanor was brought to life through meticulous styling and props. Without needing overblown flourishes, the quiet presence of this work speaks for itself.
