[Komeiji Koishi Cosplay] Touhou Project's Unconscious Afternoon: This Piano Is Really Playing Itself

Sitting in front of the wooden piano dressed in this Komeiji Koishi outfit, the moment my fingers rested on the keys, I completely immersed myself in that wondrous mood set by Touhou Project. As the unconscious wanderer in Touhou Project, her inherent temperament carries a tranquil vibe detached from everyday life, and this set of photos shot at the Valley Courtyard captures that feeling exceptionally well.

Let's talk about the costume details first. What attracted me most about this cosplay outfit was the gold brocade texture on the top, which glowed softly under the sunlight. Paired with black lace trim accents, the vintage feel and Lolita cosplay elegance were instantly elevated to the maximum. The massive bright yellow bow at the waist served as the visual focal point of the whole look, enhancing color saturation while amplifying the character's playful charm. The lower skirt consisted of layered blue-green tulle, boasting a wonderful fluffiness when hanging naturally to give the silhouette a fuller appearance. The wide-brimmed straw hat on top was also full of texture, with its black ruffles and yellow ribbon echoing the outfit beautifully. The wig chosen was a slightly wavy blue-green short cut, appearing light and lively, with a subtle translucent glow when sunlight struck it, making it extremely camera-friendly.

The shooting location was chosen at Valley Courtyard, an environment that matched this Lolita cosplay attire so effortlessly. The wooden upright piano naturally carried a story-rich sense of time's passage. Surrounding green foliage, dappled vines, and subtly visible pink flowers adorned the frame like a secret garden from a fairy tale. When afternoon sunlight filtered through gaps in the leaves, casting beams of light onto the piano keys and my body, that natural soft-light effect was something no studio lights could replicate.

This time I collaborated with photographer "Chouxian Paizhao Xiguaren", who excels at capturing such moments of playing light and shadow. Before shooting, he communicated that he wanted to convey an astonishing piano scene as if questioning "how is this piano playing itself?", so instead of having me deliberately pose in a standard piano-playing posture, he had me rest my hands casually on the keys, feeling their response and enjoying this quiet interactive process. Looking at the final shots, bolstered by sunlight, the edges of the yellow ribbons and black lace were outlined with golden rims, giving the light and shadow a remarkably translucent quality. The photographer also put thought into composition, utilizing the lines of the wooden piano bench and the scene's depth of field so the character completely merged into the background rather than standing abruptly in the middle of the frame.

When cosplaying a character with a specific background lore, finding the right emotional state is crucial. Komeiji Koishi's character setting inherently departs from conventional logic, carrying a slightly detached, ethereal feel. Therefore, I deliberately slowed down all my movements on set, refraining from intentionally projecting a sharp gaze or forced smile, instead maintaining a quiet posture with my profile slightly lowered. This relaxed feel not only made the final shots look more natural, but also avoided the stiffness commonly seen in cosplay photography.

Of course, every outdoor shoot comes with its challenges. Although the outdoor environment at Valley Courtyard was beautiful, wearing so many layers of clothing while navigating through plants meant the skirt hem easily got snagged, and I had to constantly make sure the straw hat didn't blow away in the wind. Moreover, this blue-green dress picked up dust easily while walking outdoors, requiring me to lift the hem carefully. Fortunately, the weather was wonderful that day with very comfortable temperatures—no scorching sun or sudden rain—giving us plenty of time to fine-tune light and camera angles.

Looking back, this was probably one of the most comfortable outdoor shoots I've done recently. Without chasing extravagant special effects or making overly exaggerated poses, relying purely on the interaction between sunlight, location, outfit, and piano keys brought out that effortless, enchanting vibe characteristic of Touhou Project. For a moment, staring at the keys for a while, I felt as if the old piano would genuinely start playing a matching melody on its own the instant I placed my hands on it. Perhaps this is the magic when character and scene collide: when the costume fits, the scene aligns, and the lighting is just right, the frozen moment becomes exceptionally compelling.

After posting this work, the response was quite positive, with many fellow fans in the comments expressing great interest in the piano element. Moving forward, I will likely try more outdoor garden photography shoots for other characters from Touhou Project to see what new styles we can create in different courtyards.
