[Kochiya Sanae Cosplay] Touhou Project Shrine Maiden Studio Shoot Record

Today, I wrapped up an indoor studio photoshoot for Kochiya Sanae cosplay. During the pre-production phase, most of my focus went into refining the wardrobe and hand-crafted props. The blue-and-white Shrine maiden attire is visually striking; the crisp white lace and navy piping along the top needed meticulous ironing to ensure impeccable fabric texture before the lens. To stay faithful to the character design, I put on a long emerald-green wig, accessorized with her signature red-eyed green frog clip and plush white snake ornaments coiling down both sides. The white snake wrapped around my neck was a key focal point—it took extensive scouting to find one that felt supple and soft while maintaining its dimensional form without collapsing. For props, the gohei wand and hexagram-patterned streamer pennants were assembled by hand piece by piece. They had substantial physical heft, and sweeping them through the air alongside the oversized flared sleeves created an organic, fluttering kinetic grace.

The set was staged inside a traditional Japanese style washitsu laid with tatami flooring. The sliding shoji screens, wooden floor lanterns, and dark wood cabinetry in the background, complemented by faux cherry blossom boughs suspended overhead, established a rich traditional ambiance that aligned seamlessly with the shoot's aesthetic. Kochiya Sanae possesses an exceptionally vibrant, energetic disposition, so in terms of pose direction, I strove to keep my movements open and elongated. When waving the gohei or pulling the streamers, using the extension of my arms to guide whole-body lines allowed the skirt gathers to flare out naturally. To showcase the tailoring and layered structure of the costume, I cycled through formal seiza, half-kneeling, upright standing, and dynamic leg lifts. The deep blue skirt is patterned with fine white starbursts over a white lace petticoat; as I moved through dancing steps, the dual tiers billowed against each other, creating rich visual depth on camera.

The photographer provided invaluable guidance regarding lighting and composition. Warm ambient glow diffused outward from the lanterns, casting gentle gradient roll-offs across the blue fabric. For close-ups holding a tea bowl or clasping hands in prayer, I dialed back the extroverted kinetic energy from the dance sequences, shifting my expression to a softer, reverent calm—this balance of emotional tone and physical posture was crucial for character embodiment. Transitioning back into energetic posing, the white crew socks paired with brown loafers proved not only comfortable to move in, but grounded her youthful schoolgirl charm. The iconic frog and serpent motifs blended with starry celestial prints crafted a whimsical yet grounded fantasy aesthetic unique to Sanae.

The entire session unfolded smoothly. Although the studio interior ran a bit warm, standing before the meticulously staged sakura boughs in these multi-layered garments made slipping into character second nature the moment the shutter clicked. From coordinate matching and prop fabrication to immersive set integration, every single component was carefully deliberated. Reviewing the colors, lighting ratios, and vivid details blooming on the camera display made all the creative dedication poured into this cosplay production feel deeply rewarding.
